jonesk 0 Posted May 4, 2009 I have sold a system to an installer, 5 cams and a dvr. The furthest cam from the dvr will be 970 ft. Should he use a 14/2? The cable will be pulled through conduit. Does it still need to be direct burial? He has suggested using 14/2 speaker cable... Is this wise? What are your recommendations?
survtech 0 Posted May 5, 2009 I have sold a system to an installer, 5 cams and a dvr. The furthest cam from the dvr will be 970 ft. Should he use a 14/2? It depends on the power draw of the camera. The cable will be pulled through conduit. Does it still need to be direct burial? Yes. Conduit can collect water, especially if it is buried. Using indoor-rated cable is asking for future trouble. He has suggested using 14/2 speaker cable... Is this wise? No. Speaker cable, while it would handle the power, is not rated for it.
LEARNINGCCTV 0 Posted May 7, 2009 You could get away with 16/2 no problem. But they have 16/2 cable for power. Why use speaker cable? Is the system 24VAC or 12VDC? You can go a lot longer distance with 24VAC.
jonesk 0 Posted May 11, 2009 I spec'd in a shielded 16/2 indoor outdoor. because of the lengths of the runs, I used a 24v power supply. Thanks.
