Recommended distance to mount cam from flood light?

Recommended Posts

Using rg59 18/2, and an ir bullet (dome as well) how far is a safe distance to mount from a flood light? 1', 2' 10', etc. And I assume if the cam and light are pointed in the same direction the light should be behind the cam? If more info is needed please let me know. Rory, Cooperman? Thanks so much in advance!

there is no set distance, if you are using motion record, i would say keep it about 10 feet away because of the bugs at night, if 24 hour record I would bring it out with a monitor at night and see what gives you the best picture.

thanks sviviani, I'm planning on using motion det. lighting so hopefully bugs won't be a huge problem (however, I live in Ga so there are enough around in the summer!) From more of a power/noise/interference perspective, what rule of thumb do you usually use?

Putting the camera right beside the light shouldn't pose any problems. The only one I could really foresee if if the light is in or near the camera's direct field of view, which could cause flare and washout, but if they're both pointing at the same area away from the building there should be no issue.

If you're using a motion-activated floodlight to illuminate the scene you're recording, though, you probably don't need to bother with IR cameras.

Thanks for the input Soundy. So, there are no concerns with mounting the cam with-in .5-1' from the lights, interference-wise?

Unfortunately, IR cams are all I have at the moment.

Unless the light has some special device to create huge amounts of EMI, no, there should be no issue with interference.
