LED Infrared Illumination questions....

Recommended Posts

First time here, but I've learned that "forums" are where the real experts and experience are.

I operate an indoor clubmaking/fitting/repair facility in Warner Robins GA. An important part of my business is video analysis of golf swings and putting strokes. In my fitting studio I have a three camera setup through a quad, and a four camera/quad setup in the putter fitting studio. The cameras in the main studio are Panasonic Color CCTV that capture at 30fps through a Videum board. The putter studio cameras are "mini" CCTV with the same capture setup.

While these are the most sophisticated systems in our area, I'm not as happy as I'd like to be with the color rendition and "motion" on the video due to the low lighting (flourescent). I've tried different bulbs without much improvement.

What type of illumination improvement would I see if I switched to LED/IR equipped cameras and would I also get true color rendition? I'm satisfied with the 30fps capture, I just want to find a way to speed up the shutters and freeze the motion without having to pass out SPF30 to the clients.

Thanks in advance. If you like golf you'll love www.4gea.com

Hi Dana.

Slow Shutter Speeds, slows down motion, but lightens up the image.

Anyway, do you have any clips on how dark it is in your locations?

What cameras do you have now - as only certain cameras will work well with Infrared. Exact model number is needed to check.Panosonic has a couple that work with IR, though they dont seem to publish them. GE and Sanyo work well with Infrared for sure, I have used them, plus they publish their "Spectral Response".

That said. with Infrared, you will Not get any real color images. They are designed to work in Pitch Dark, hence, no color. Imagine it as if you are pointing a large flash light at the area, in the dark, but without color.

If the area is not pitch dark, you maybe able to get away with a low lux color camera, which will see in color, in lower lighting situations. These do tend to pixelise, but they see in color. Exview is the most common, and is the best technology to see in low light situations, but NOT in Pitch Dark unless you get an Exview Camera with an IR response then use IR Leds/Bulbs.

Some more info on what camera you have now .. let us know.

Rory
