todd2 0 Posted July 28, 2009 I'm trying to evalute candidates for a new DVR to replace the AVC 761 I currently have. Are there any other candidates I should consider besides the Intellicam 4XLA? The biggest problem I have with my current unit are the two ftp problems mentioned in the other threads. It seems with the 4XLA, that it doesn't send snapshots at all like the AVC. Instead, I'm told it waits until the end of the motion recording on the hard drive, and then simply sends that file to the ftp server. I'm not too keen on that, because it means if the connection is broken with no stop in motion from premises entry, the file will not be sent. Anything out there that either sends smaller chunks as they are captured or sends snapshots like the AVC761 (but done right, where if motion continues, more snapshots are sent periodically, not just once)? This is getting to be very aggreviating; it also seems like I need a DVR with open source firmware to get exactly what I want. Also, the modifications I made to the AVC761 to quiet it (replaced stock fan with a larger fan running at low rpm by cutting a hole in the top of the case, and unsoldered the damn piezo sounder) will void the warranty of the Intellicam. scorpion 0 Posted July 28, 2009 The Piezo, and the relay can be quieted in the menu selections. There is no need to pull it out except for the power up cycle. If you hear the power up beep that much, then you may need a UPS. You can tape the top of it to quiet it as well.

The problem is that even though the unit has a timer, the timer only controls whether recording is turned on/off; it doesn't put the unit into a powersave mode like a consumer DVR. At night I want the unit to shut down completely, so I drive it with a timer. I do have a UPS, but the timer is between the UPS and the DVR. Wouldn't taping up ventilation holes be a bad idea? Maybe I need a ventilated cabinet that can help block some of the fan noise.
scorpion 0 Posted July 28, 2009 I have to make a correction. When I said tape the top of it I was refering to the piezo device rather than removing it, and voiding the warranty.
todd2 0 Posted July 29, 2009 I have to make a correction. When I said tape the top of it I was refering to the piezo device rather than removing it, and voiding the warranty. The piezo units are tough little buggers. Before I unsoldered mine from the AVC761, I filled it (through the hole) with caulk. I waited 24 hours for the caulk to dry. No effect. shoreviewsecurity 0 Posted August 3, 2009 Since I saw your posting a few days ago I have attempted to set my XLA up so that it would send the motion file immediately without success. I even tried to drop the file size down to " 0 " and also without any number in the file size box. Extremely nice feature but I can understand your concern. I however have a PC on site that I use as the FTP Server using FileZilla. If you are concerned about losing your Internet connection, you may want to consider using a PC on site to retrieve the files. This way if you lose your Internet at least it was still transferred to the PC. With a few of my customers, I did this exact same thing but have had the luxury of having the PC in another part of the building, hidden and behind locked doors where no one would expect a PC to be. This PC was dedicated to only this effort and only myself and the customer knew it was in place. We even went as far as to equip the install with UPS's as the customer was concerned about the power being turned off prior to the break in.
