Is there any disadvantage to having 4 different brands of IP cameras for a security system?

Only if the NVR software you are using isnt compatable with all of them. If it is then it shouldn't be a problem

It's actually a good idea becuase no camera manufacture makes a camera for every situation.

In comparison to using cameras from a single manufacturer, using cameras from multiple manufacturers has a few potential issues:

 

1) If you use cameras from a single manufacturer, the manufacturer often provides the software for free (Axis being a notable exception).

2) If you use cameras from multiple manufacturers, even if they support the cameras, there may be some limitations on what functionalities of the cameras can be used (less efficient CODEC or key features not supported).

1. You can do it, but why? Just pick a single manufacturer since you are still in design stages of the project. Save yourself the headache when you have a problem.

 

2. Using 4 differfent cameras, you will probaly be using a software that supports the MJPEG stream from the cameras....hopefully they all support it.

 

3. Based on 1 and 2, pick one manufacturer.

When you pick your NVR software just make sure it supports all of the cameras you would like to use.

 

What happens if you need a PTZ camera, 5 megapixel and cheap 1.3 megapixel camera with audio? You can't get that from one manufacture.

 

I thought that one of the main ideas behind IP systems is the ability to network different devices. Open standards

This is not true.... Every NVR software that I have used allows you to use different compression per camera.
