Motherboard chipset compatibility

Recommended Posts

Sorry if this is a repeat. I did search but couldn't find anything.

I am looking at a number of hardware DVR cards. Many of them recommend using only older Intel chipsets: 845 / 865 /915/925/945/P965

Does anyone know of compatible, newer chipsets that will work with these? I hate to buy 3 year old motherboards to build systems to accept the DVR card.

I know newer technology works as I have several running on new Intel boards with Windows 7, but they are software with Techwell 6805 chipset. I need hardware cards and am looking at several wtih TI chipsets, and they recommend the above, as do almost all the DVR cards I have been looking at.

Thanks for any ideas.

Lumpy

Kinda depends on exactly what "these" are...

I've (re)built a number of Vigil DVRs using HiCap and XECAP (ComArt-based) capture cards on a wide range of boards using Intel, SiS, and VIA chipsets, mostly using Windows 2000 and XP Pro, but I did experiment with Windows 7 as well. Vigil run without a hiccup on all of them.

Lumpy I still build those on those motherboards today. The cards I use are chipset dependent from the factory reps I have talked to. My question is why change what works stable in what it is built for. These are very stable dvrs when built proper no crashes works all the time and gives the customer no problems that leads to happy customers.

Thanks for the info, but my point is that motherbords with these old chpsets are getting to be old technology. I have client's with their own computers that want to add cards. I am also surprised that manufacturers are not upgrading the technology to work with newer OS and boards. There are a number of software cards that work fine with all the newer Intel chipsets and with Windows7. It would be nice if the hardware chipsets could be updated as well.

Again, thanks for the input.

Cheers,

Lumpy

I am currently building systems with either Conexant/Brooktree 878 or Techwell TW2804 Encoder chipset boards, using Intel P35 and P45 chipset boards from Gigabyte, and Nvidia video cards with no problems.

You might ask tech support for your boards directly, they may have newer info than their documentation.

A lot of them wrote their specs a long time ago (like when I was building them on Win98... Yeah, that's what the daily reboot option was for, memory leaks like a sieve!)

Most encoder manufacturers design around Intel chipsets. I have had problems with older Via Chipsets, and Sis was a major problem.

I have the same issue.

The system had been running just fine for 6 weeks. ! Yesterday I had to revise my HDD RAID1 configuration (increase the operating system space). This erased all my applications & data so I reinstalled Vista and received the message "Compatibility issue between windows & chipset....Intel quickpath architecture input output hub". I did not install the linked fix because the version on my machine was newer.

I'm now having internet connectivity issues.... can't establish & maintain connectivity. Thunderbird mail client isn't able to install a new update, etc.

Also can't get my LAN to recognize the 2 computers (each computer can recognize the network attached storage – NAS).

Saving files, etc. is much slower than previously.

I wonder if a recent Vista patch has caused this issue?

Let's keep this thread updated as we learn more. We're not alone on this issue.
