Trying to learn. Geovision 800/16, camera choices

Recommended Posts

Is there some certification/traing that I could go through here in Florida that would get me to the level where I could install, consult, support... supplement my income? Are there a couple of books you could refer me to?

Previously I was using a GV650 4-channel card, experimenting, then I upgraded. I now have a Geovision GV-800 16 channel card. I have it in a P4 Compaq 2.3GHZ machine 1.2-GB RAM, with XP Pro. Sometimes I see that my recorded video is choppier than at other times. I wonder why it's not more smooth, all the time? I do have the frame-rates set high. I did buy this card off ebay and as I've been reading this forum I'm thinking this might be come pirate-copy that doesn't perform like a real GV?

Several neighbors are about to install a few systems in different locations in our community. Geo seems to be able to monitor all systems at one location. As I use the DMMultiView app on another computer, to view my cameras I notice my CPU climbs pretty high on my DVR computer whenever I connect to it remotely via DMMultview. So this makes me concerned that if I try to centrally monitor 5 different DVR computers I might run into some performance issues. Thoughts? For this project, I'd like to keep our costs down, but for all of us to have basically the same equipment, that could be monitored at each indidual location, but also at a central location... I think it would be more simple to use a dedicated DVR rather than PC based GV system that I've been experimenting with.

I've been buying different cameras with different lenses, experimenting. I picked up a couple of cheap Gadspot cameras (1/3 super had 520). To me they seem great at short distances, but I'd like input from you experts. They seem very pixilated at greater distances. Thoughts on Gadspot? General thoughts on camers.

I know many of these topics have been covered in this forum, but I'm having a hard time clarifying some of these issues in my minde. There are a lot of posts in this forum. There is so much information it's almost overwhelming. Lots of opinions sometimes not sure what to believe, etc. I'm trying to learn from my own experience. I'll greatly appreciate your response to the above several questions.

One more thing... in the case of these Gadspot cameras... they say they're using Sony Super HAD sensors, but I'm thinking... it's not just the sensor, but also the optics that make a good camera. Thoughts on what makes a good camera?

A GV800-16 could run in a P4 2.3 but it is pushing it. If using 8.2+ Geo software then it will run very poorly, as like with Microsoft, the newer the software the slower it is, or moreso the faster the hardware needs to be. If using 7.xx it should run fine, if using 8.0-8.12 you will need to tweak XP to make it work ok. Either way you should never use Default XP, tweak it and secure it, otherwise that makes for a poor DVR system.

If the card is old enough you could try and get 7.xx from somewhere online and try and install that, if not already. You would need to totally remove any newer geo software though, check the Geo forum for free software to do that, or do it manually, also remove all Geo ini files in the Windows folder. 7.xx has that awful green GUI, but you can use the free skins i posted in the free software section, that make it look like 8.0.

Now, if its ebay it COULD be a clone and you will have issues no matter what. Unfortunately you get what you pay for, there really is no way to go cheap on Geo systems, BUT it is still cheaper than most 16 channel stand alones and with many more features.

Look under this Geovision sub forum for the Sticky threads, they have somethings that might help.
