PCIe vs PCI DVR Cards

The PCIe bus is becoming the dominant interface on PC Motherboards nowadays. With this current advancement in the technology, the PC-based DVR industry was driven to adjust and adapt to the improving and fast-paced PC world. Thus, the entrance of PCIe DVR Cards into the CCTV scene.

 

Okay, the PCI DVR Cards will soon be replaced by the PCIe DVR Cards. This is inevitable. But what are the particular advantages of moving to PCIe when it comes to the DVR Application. Yes it will cut the over-all cost because of cheaper motherboards but will there be improvements in the DVR system's operation? I would like to know.

PCIexpress, as the name suggests, supports far higher bandwidth than PCI. The PCI buss maxes out at 133MB/s., whereas PCIe's LOWEST spec is 250MB/s, up to 16GB/s for the highest current spec.

 

That makes for far greater and faster data transfer to and from the card, which could potentially mean larger (more channels) capture cards, or coupled with cheap drive space, could mean lower compression or even no compression of analog video.

the problem with PCI is the PCI bus is shared. when running big data cards the bus tends to get flooded and it all goes to a crawl. especially so if you have data capture like cctv and gigabit lan cards installed.

older designs used to be worse as the onboard sound/lan/etc where shared with the pci bus.

PCI bus has been a big bottle neck for a long time, so the PCIe was very welcome. unfortunately manufactures where very slow of the mark producing cards in PCIe.

 

don't forget the PCI 133MB/s limit is never actually achieved. most pc's run far less than that.

Actually, there are two kinds of slots in pcs, but most pcs only has one PCIE slot, but has more than one PCI slots. Moreover, it is hard to achieve to real time recording via PCI cards. In order to save cost, combine the PCI cards and PCIE Cards can make it.
