I think H.264 is ment to be one of the best when it comes to live viewing playback is some times better then mpeg4 and some times its not.

If DVR's run like a pc then Linux is a stable platform and wont crash as much as a windows base system. But that is if it runs like a pc. And all so in Linux you should see lots of updates as its a open platform.

Loads of people allways codeing for it and the dvr people can take what thay like the look of and mod it to fit there systems and then add it to a firmware update

You could just look for a system thats HDMI out or good spec VGA out this would give you the best quality out put.

Hope it help's just a bit I may be 100% wrong on this witht he OS but im going on if it runs like a pc. The tv out I think im right on

Well, Linux used on DVRs is embedded OS, which means that it's very tightly connected with hardware base on which it's running. Only it's kernel is used, to drive basic stuff like HDDs, video outputs and as a basis for H.264 compression. It isn't so easy to modify it as end user, because you really have to know hardware of DVR used, and DVR is dependent on FPGA logic which is probably locked. But, on the other hand, as an open source solution, it's always much easier to moode viewer software to suite personal needs! Linux embedded is OS of choice for cheaper, made in China, DVRs, because kernel is open source so it cuts development( or duplicating ) costs!

JE-D9216 also known as jetview system. not a true h.264 system. not worth up-grading to ............just look on ebay. full of second hand units. (looks like customers were not happy)

Do you mean the "9 Ch 240fps Real-Time H.264 Linux D1 Standalone DVR 1TB " from rshadman ?

I can't seem to find second hand units on ebay.

I wish they make DVR with HDMI output.

not 8 but you find alot of 16 on ebay.

also the spec is d1 h.264. with playback in cif ???? it is just a cif machine the lowest quality you can get. take a look at the avertech or the new avermedia range (also has hdmi) d1 on all cameras real time and both systems have good back-up support.

Thanks for your advise.

Now I have to find supplier in Australia or someone in US that ship internationally.

Budget around 1-1.5K only though.
