CCTV Certification

Hello everyone,

I've done searches on this website, yahoo, and google and unfortuantly results could not answer my questions. Is there any type of professional organization or CCTV Certification program here in da States?

The only one I personally know of focusing on CCTV tech is NICET.

I'm not certified, but I may eventually work towards it.

 

I'd love some feedback from other folks on what they think about it, or other types of certification programs for various types of designers/installers.

Never heard of such a thing, but I guess the certs look good on paper. I know Pelco gives FREE classes w/hotel (mariott at that) to get cert pelco installer. You just pay travel. Had some card access certs freebees too. ALl good classes.

Hey, I'd spend a few daze in Fresno if Pelco would pay for the digs. Sign me up! (Then I could ask them why they've been sitting on my order for housings and mounts for two weeks).

Nicet is a pretty good certification, but I know the new certification alot of people are looking for now is PCI with ASIS.

Though certification in alarms or CCTV doesnt mean much. And if you get some paper from a manufacturer it means even less, unless you are only selling that manufacturers products, which makes little sense as no manufacturer makes the perfect full line of CCTV products. GE, Pelco, Honeywell, they all do that training thing, but its only with their products, so dont waste your time.

Pelco showed me 'schtuff' in their controllers that I didn't know existed. You would look pretty stupid programming (or showing the client) a product and not being able to answer questions from the client. I've also have gone to infant protection schooling, which also helped tremendously. When doing an install, the owner of your company (nor the distributor that sold it to the owner-he probably doesn't know the full capabilities of the system anyway) is not going to show the client how to use the system, the installer is.

 

Keep going to these classes and you will get a feel of all the features that will suit a future perspective client's needs and or let you see what is new and exciting (before it makes it way to your local Isle-by then it is outdated anyway). The more classes you can get from all these companies security products, the better technician you will be.

I'm planning on going for the ASIS PSP cert at some point, then maybe NICET cert, and after that, maybe the ASIS CPP and PCI.

 

I know thier value is limited in terms of whether or not they will directly translate into more business. Mainly I just enjoy learning new stuff and I like programs like this where other pros have identified resourcs and learning objectives.

 

Mostly, I guess they just give me something constructive to do that doesn't require greens fees, lost balls, and that I can do indoors, at night, while drinking beer!

The NICET certification program is moving along. About 5 years ago the CCTV Industry Group of the Security Industry Association created a panel to encourage CCTV installers & designers to get more formal training. They selected NICET as the certifiying body because they are truly indepedent. NICET does not offer training but only provides certification. NICET is nationally recognized and the panel felt that NICET's certification would be an encouragment for both employers and employees to invest in formal education and training. There are many training groups that are in the process of revising their courses to cover all of the elements that are included in the final practice analysis document. As an active member of the SIA subcommittee, I'll be glad to address any questions or comments from interested parties. If I don't know, I'll at least push you in the right direction to get your answer. As an unabashed plug, the link to our website has links to NICET's and the State of Tennessee's related links.
