Guest Posted January 3, 2010 I have an application that needs to monitor a buoy a mile out over water. Looking for a suggestion for a camera with a good zoom and quality image. Is this for a static camera or do you need a PTZ camera? If PTZ what is the maximum speed the target will need to track? What is the size of the image you need to see at the Buoy (one mile distant)? Don't need to track anything but occasionally need PTZ across the lake looking for boats, etc. However the primary object is observing the buoy so the PTZ requirement be sacrificed if need be. It would be great to able to see man-size object on the buoy (it is large buoy ~40ftx40ft) however the primary object is to see if a boat (~20ft) is moored along side or to see if the buoy is listing. zmxtech 0 Posted January 4, 2010 you will need: 1/ Camera box style -IR cut filter 1/3 or 1/2 '' 2/ 1km away you will need a LASER to illuminate the target. 3/ PTZ controller and motor 4/ The lens I calculate a 800mm lens [i think fuji do a 750mm] 5/ A DVR to record all the fun There are some nice PTZ cams but 1km maybe not. 10k might buy the lens ? Might be better to spend the money on an IP camera [360 Deg omni mobotix?] and a wireless link to your base then you get clear images and the cost will be maybe $5k -just a thought also add -solar panel, charger, batteries and lighting my 2c zmx Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Check their website for product details. Also, regarding the lens, do you really need zoom? If I wanted to view something at a mile, I'd probably get a long fixed lens. If I needed to see objects close too, I'd at least consider using two cameras, one with a long fixed lens, and one with a more common zoom lens. A Pelco pan/tilt mount can easily hold two cameras. One of the critical issues is the creep speed of the pan/tilt motor. To mount the appropriate sized lens (see the youtube link) on a PT unit needs a heavily modified control system.
