LED question

Recommended Posts

I've been looking for a new monitor for ages but I don't like LCDs. I've tried four (three monitors and one tv) and haven't liked any of them. The problem with them is the silvery appearance you get when you view anything dark, which I believe is backlight coming through and can't be avoided with LCDs. And when you're not looking at it head on (it shows up around the edges if you're looking at it in the middle), which I believe is an issue with viewing angle.

I'm curious if LEDs will have the same issue. I've read articles about them that refer to backlighting, but is that the same thing as in LCDs? Will it still cause that silvery appearance?

Thank you.

"LED" TVs still use LCD panels to create the display... they just use white LEDs for the backlight, instead of the standard fluorescent tubes. The "problem" that creates the "silvery" appearance still exists, but some designs get around it by turning off the LEDs where they're not needed. I don't know if that's something you'll find in any but the high-end HDTVs, though...
