Backup camera with 28 IR LEDs...any good?

why try to reinvent the wheel.

because the wheel doesn't fit.

what are you going to see with the image distortion, poor distance perspective, with it mounted at a distance and on a 4" screen? not enough to be worth the $$$ even for cheap one.

they are generally design for seeing things like kids behind the vehicle. or backing into a tight car space. camera is usually on bumper ie close. for that use they work fine.

 

i would also go for sony over sharp. you don't need high res, 380 will be fine, its being able to get clear view in different light thats important.

one thing like about mine is being able to look into the dark garage that you can't normally see into.

 

Tweak. the poor guy came on here for advice for a revesing camera. not on how to build one. the camera i posted is not an ebay crap and it is very high spec. plus he can return it.

 

we have gone from a good quality revesing camera advice. to the guy having to build his own (he is not a engineer)

There seems to be some debate about the pros/cons of mounting it up high vs. down low. Again, I primarily need something that can clearly see the area immediately behind my bumper, extending out 10-15 feet for aiding in parallel parking and making sure I don't hit anything while backing up. Being able to see further back (for driving in reverse) would be great but isn't critical, especially at the expense of being able to see right behind me.

 

I would love to mount it up high for the "big picture" perspective but not if the image gets distorted and ugly in the critical area I need to see directly behind me because of the added 4-5 feet of distance. And I would love to mount it on my bumper for the clarity of the image of what's directly behind me and the direct line-of-sight it would provide (the camera would be pointed "out" rather than "down").

 

Is there some sort of camera/location combination that gives the best of both worlds?

 

I'd say you're over-thinking it. Any wide lens is going to have some distortion, that's simple optics (unless you get into some very expensive lenses). Once you can see what's behind you, you'll get used to judging distances pretty quickly. Personally, I'd go higher, because then you can angle down and get a better idea when something is actually getting close to your bumper. Mounted low, you'll have little or no way to tell the actual distance, since there's no depth perception.

Last question, that camera I listed above has 380TVL resolution. They make an identical one with 550TVL...

Would that monitor I have selected (resolution: 1440 x 234) be able to take advantage of the higher resolution or would the 380TVL be sufficient? I know they calculate and measure resolution in different ways.

Unless it's substantially the same price, I wouldn't worry about 380 vs. 550 TVL. You wouldn't see the difference on a screen that small either way.

maybe its a kiwi thing. if they don't make it, build it !

 

i would rather he know what hes getting in for rather than just get pawned off with what ever is on the shelf and end up being disappointed.

especially if he picks the right camera, he can simply pop the cover off and swap the lens to something that suits his needs.

 

find the solution for the customer not make the customer fit the solution

Tweak. outside of his needs. crap have you used one. its high spec the picture quality and field of view is A1. like i said its fitted to RVs worth thousand of dollars.

gee give the poor guy some credit, any monkey can put a box back together. they only leak when they don't have any seals to start with.

i don't see you complaining about all the guys pulling apart water proof box camera housings to fit cameras in.

 

please don't start the "its fitted to........" speech. i've been a trademan way too long for that one.

 

at the end of the day, wide angle lens camera viewed on a small screen is very hard to drive with. quality of picture is not all that important compared to angle of view.

as long as he knows whats hes in for, then its up to him.

 

if a bullet cam didn't stick out so much, a water proof adjustable bullet cam would be the answer.
