Pelco Keyboard KBD4000 and protocols

Recommended Posts

Hello! I have in stock a Pelco KBD4000 keyboard but never had chance to use it before.

Now I have to control a variable speed Pan & Tilt through a telemetry receiver that fits Pelco-D protocol. My question is: Is it possible to connect the KBD4000 keyboard directly to the telemetry receiver? I've searched on the internet and found that the keyboard works with a protocol called Coaxitron so I have realised that probably I won't be able to use this keyboard now.

I've found on the market several keyboards with joystick (like the Pelco KBD300A), and they can be connected directly to my telemetry receiver as they fits Pelco D protocol.

But how can I use this KBD4000? (I just don't want to put it back on the shelf to keep collecting dust)

Thanks!

You have a couple of choices.. Get a used Pelco Multiplexer to connect the KBD4000 to, and get your RS422 or Coaxitron output from it, or, (and this is a little trickier) the KBD4000 and KBD300 are the exact same chassis, just a different programming chip (easily changed, in a socket on the board) and overlay decal.

If you can get the chip and decal (sorry, don't have the exact part#'s handy) from Pelco, you can change one into the other.

Thank you for your advices. To get the correct chip and decal would be rather difficult for me while I have here a Pelco multiplexer MX4009CD which I can use as you suggest, in fact I had the same idea but then I realised that the data (to control P&T) outputs from the multiplexer are on coaxial and the protocol is Coaxitron (is it correct?), while my telemetry receiver fits Pelco-D protocol and has an RS485 port (twisted pair).

Sorry I'm not familiar with the Pelco equipment, but with the stuff I have in hand it seems to me that I should convert the Coaxitron output from the mutiplexer into an RS485 Pelco-D twisted pair to connect it to my telemetry. Is that possible and how can I do it? Thanks for helping me.

Thank you very much! This is exactly what I need to be able to use that KBD4000 with my Pelco-D telemetry receiver. I will now try to get one of those converters!

Thanks!
