Can a cd r/w be replaced by a DVD recorder?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I recently replaced a faulty 160 gb IDE HDD for a new 500 Gb Sata Drive using a IDE to sata drive interface card which plugs into the dvr's IDE HDD slot and the DVR works fine again.

My question is, could a old cd r/w be exchanged for a new dvd r/w recorder using another ide to sata converter card in the IDE socket for the cd recorder, or will i have to stick to a cd recorder in the DVR.

I have changed a cd recorder in the past in a PC but do not know if the same can be done for a stand alone security DVR for the device to be recognised.

I suppose i could just go ahead and try a dvd r/w recorder but wondered if anyone had changed a cd for dvd recorder themselves.

The DVR is a Triplex Real Time Stand Alone DVR15-VT04-CDRW

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards Steve

In theory, the drive should work... but whether you'll get DVD-burning functionality is questionable. For example, Windows XP's built-in CD burning will only work with CD-Rs in a DVD writer; it doesn't recognize DVD-Rs as recordable disks.

Thanks for replying, i guess I will just go ahead and try a dvd r/w inplace of the cd r/w recorder. it is will be easy to make temporary change over. if it doesnt work i will have a spare dvd r/w for my PC.

I will post results when i have tried.

Regards

Is that a Cop Security 15-VT04-CDRW (http://www.cop-eu.com/sections/ranges/DVRs/VT/index.php), and did you have any success with the DVD burner?

I maintain an 8 and a 16 channel version of the above model 15-VT08-CDRW & 15-VT16-CDRW . Both have jamming CD burners which could use replacing, and I am hoping I can get away with replacing them with a couple of IDE DVD-burners, since CD burners are not so readily available these days? I'd assume however that even if they work, I'll still only be able to burn CDRs.

Also have you had any problems with it since fitting a 500 gig hard drive, I need to fit a second IDE drive to the 16 channel box, as it currently only has a single 400GB drive fitted, and I was hoping that the recent 2016 fix firmware update might also have included support for 500GB hard drives (the stated max is only 2x 400GB), as 800GB still won't really give me enough record time at the desired frame rate.
