tmescan 0 Posted April 30, 2010 Anyone order premade computers from Newegg etc and just slap NVR software on them? Would like to use a few IP cams at the house but only have a laptop is this an OK approach? Thanks
Ted 0 Posted April 30, 2010 You can use just about any computer for the purpose. A laptop is normally not built for 24/7 diskwriting but I have a couple of clients who use laptops with Milestone and a couple of Axis 207M and they have worked fine for two years and still do. Not that I recommend it but it works.

thewireguys 3 Posted May 3, 2010 specs depend on your NVR software. Some need dual Xeons and some will run on Atoms.
Sawbones 0 Posted May 5, 2010 It's completely dependent on what your installation requires. I've used off-lease corporate small-form-factor desktops to build several NVRs (you can get them cheap as dirt on Ebay)... and other than adding a big fat drive and a real network card (Intel Pro/1000), they're good-to-go. The dual-core processor will run 8-10 cameras in Luxriot with little problem. Here's a favorite: a Lenovo M55 Thinkcentre For bigger installs and megapixel-heavy setups, you need something different. Here's one I built in a 2U case, with a quad-core and four 1.5TB drives: It's all dependent on what hardware and software you're using.
