Sounds like an Avtech DVR.

Are both the same OS, and are both trying to connect from a remote location or on the same network?

Rory:I dont remember exactly the type but i can check it out later.

tomcctv: My laptop is using xp and the other laptop is using vista and i am trying to connect from remote location.

Just imagine 2 laptop sit side by side when one can login and others cant.

Thanks.

All,

Apparently i have to turn off windows firewall and anti virus to be able to login.

FYI, video viewer has been allowed in windows firewall.

but not sure how to do it in bit defender anti virus.

Thanks

You shouldnt need to turn off Windows Firewall, at least it is not that good that it would normally stop you logging in. A 3rd party firewall could prevent the program from working properly though.

Which one cant you login with, your Laptop with XP or the one with Vista?

Windows firewall is a very basic one, shouldnt affect it. But you could use the Windows firewall settings and add the video viewer exe. I use Video Viewer with XP though and its for the Avtech DVRs, never had an issue logging in and I have Windows Firewall enabled. Not sure if this is the same Video Viewer though.

Ok .. couple other things to check.

1-Hosts File - make sure something is not getting blocked there

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Open with Notepad, should only be "127.0.0.1 localhost" by default.

2-Check DNS servers in TCP/IP Settings.

3-Check TCP/IP Filtering. All should be enabled by default, and no ports being filtered.

4-Make sure you have no proxy server running.

5-Telnet to the DVR - start, run, cmd, telnet ip port where ip = the ip of the DVR and port = the port of the DVR. If the screen clears then it is okay, otherwise it will give an error.

Also, Im not 100% sure if the viewer you use uses Java or not, but its worth updating that anyway. If your viewer says Anytime Anywhere then its an avtech one .. i cant say for certain though still if that uses Java or not, I know their older one, Video Server E did rely on Java and errors with that may result in login problems as well. See this thread for the latest version of Video Viewer though, I think yours is the Avtech one as 1.5 was the older one like I had, this newer one is 1.6.1: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=21570

Java:

http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Roula who posted that thread seems to have alot of knowledge of the Avtech DVRs, also Scorpion who is also a member here also does and has a website up for support: http://scorpiontheater.com/videoviewer.aspx

you might want to also ask them, or wait until they come on the forum and see this thread, being a weekend they might have family business to deal with

3-Goto your network connection .. right click properties, while there take note of other checked items, let us know what they are. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click properties. Click Advanced. Click Options tab, highlite tcp/ip filtering and click properties. Each check box should say Permit All.

4-I'll have to get back to that, as that gets more detailed.

5-Start, Run, Cmd, telnet IP PORT, eg. telnet 192.168.1.200 80

There are:

- client for microsoft networks

- file and printer sharing

- Qos Packet scheduler

- aegis protocol

- wlan transport

- internet protocol tcp/ip

i have enabled tcp/ip filtering as you suggested and it asked me to restart the computer.

5-Start, Run, Cmd, telnet IP PORT, eg. telnet 192.168.1.200 80

this is what it said:

.Could not open connection to the host, on port 23

: Connect failed

Thanks.

Ok actually you can have tcp/ip filtering disabled and that would work the same as enabling it and enabling all. For now I would also uncheck aegis protocol and wlan transport, those I am not familiar with, neither are required for Windows Wireless. I would suggest using the Windows Wireless for now, if your PC has a 3rd party wireless tool installed.

Ok port 23 is telnet, but with Windows firewall that is only blocked for incoming requests, not outgoing.

Although it should not matter on the client computer, goto windows firewall and add port, name it 23 and set the port as 23. Did you try telnet to port 80 on the DVR?

Another thing you could try is reset the windows firewall to defaults.

Also, are you sure you are not running another firewall?

Do i add the port in the "Exceptions" tab or under advanced settings under services? If i add it under advanced setting, it wont allow me to add since port 23 is already there under "telnet server".

whats the command to do this in telnet?

I am using bit defender antivirus and i have checked that there are no firewall in that program, but please correct me if i am wrong.

I aslo have reset my windows firewall as you suggested.

Thanks.

You would do it under Exceptions, Add Port.

telnet 192.168.1.200 80

Where 192.168.1.200 is the IP, and 80 is the port.

Change the IP to your own.

From the bit defender website, it claims it has a firewall?

done

telnet 192.168.1.200 80

Where 192.168.1.200 is the IP, and 80 is the port.

Change the IP to your own.

still the same respond which could not open connection to the host.

I have tried these scenario:

1. windows firewall on, bit defender on - login failed

2. windows firewall on, bit defender off - login failed

3. windows firewall off, bit defender on - login failed

4. windows firewall off, bit defender off - login is sucessful.

thanks.
