Need networking help with DVR

Recommended Posts

Just had to replace the motherboard on our DVR system and now I am having trouble getting connected to the internet on the computer. The company who installed system is no longer in business so I am taking a stab at getting the system back up. Our system is running with XP and a GV2008 card, ver 8.2. the network connections are into a netgear wireless router , also connected to the system is a GVVS02 video server. The network for the system is using 192.168.1.1, and the internet is a static ip. I am able to connect to the video server so that end of the network is working, I do not know what setting I am missing to also connect to the static ip for the internet. I have looked into the settings in the router to see what address I should be using but I am not having much luck.

Any guidance would be much appreciated, Thanks.

If you changed your motherboard and the NIC is built into it, your port forwarding is messed up.

Login to your router and go to Firewall and find out which device has ports 80, 3550,4550,5550, 5552 and 5066 forwarded to it. Next, go to your DVR (connected to the router) and press Start, click on Run and type in cmd. At the prompt, type in ipconfig /all Scroll down to where it shows IP Address. It should be the same as what is listed in your router for the forwarded ports. The Default Gateway and DNS Server should be your router's address (192.168.1.1). Type exit to leave the command prompt.

If it's not the same, Click, Start, Control Panel, Network Connections. Right click Local Area Connection. Click Properties. Scroll to TCP/IP. Select Properties. Click the radio button to Use the Following IP Address. Enter the IP Address you found in your router for the DVR. The mask should come up with 255.255.255.0. The Default Gateway should be set to 192.168.1.1 Use the following DNS Server is set to 192.168.1.1 Leave the Alternate blank. Press OK twice. Right click on Local Area Connection and select Repair.

You should be good to go.

I assume no changes were made to the router since it was working fine before the motherboard was replaced.

Can you get on the internet with the DVR pc? Are you using port 80 for http? Is the Geovision Webserver running? Can you access the DVR from another computer on the network using its LAN address?

I reinstalled the GV software.

The router settings have not been changed.

I can only access the internet when using the cable modem's static ip, not when using the LAN ip address.

Webserver is running.

Yes I can access the DVR from another computer on the network using the LAN address.

I am unsure where the setting is for the http port 80, is that in the firewall, if so I opened that.

Thanks,

Gary

What http port is your video server using and is it connected to your netgear router? If so, check your router's services and firewall and ensure they're not both using port 80. Also check your Windows firewall.

Http port is set up in geovision under Network-Webserver. It's default is 80 and is working if you can access it from another computer on your LAN.

A little confused about your statement;

"I can only access the internet when using the cable modem's static ip, not when using the LAN ip address."

If you plug the ethernet cable from the DVR computer into the router and start internet explorer can you surf the web?

Have you run any tests using an Open Port Check tool?

Sorry if I am unclear, but basically our system begins with our Geovision DVR and GV-VS02 videoserver connected to a netgear wireless router on their own LAN 192.168... Which is connected to the cable modem for the internet which has a static IP. When the PC is connected to the router on the LAN, I cannot surf the internet. If I bypass the router and set the pc's address to the static ip of the cable modem and plug directly into it, I can surf the web.

I have checked the webserver settings they appear correct.

The video server is not sharing port 80.

Thanks for your help.

You can access the GV-VS02 remotely but not the DVR. Almost sounds like a bad cable or ethernet port on the router.

What model netgear are you using?

Is the PC static also?

If not, are you sure DHCP is working properly on it, check the service if not.

If it is, what addresses are you being assigned?

If the Cable modem is working, check the Router, perhaps that is where the problem is.

Make sure the ISP static information is correct.

Turn on remote admin on the router and try to telnet to that, or ping if your ISP allows it.

Thanks for your replies...It turned out to be a bad router, replaced it and was able to restore it's settings...mostly from your postings...and everything is working great...

except....

here it comes....

Except for a second VS02 video server that has a static IP over the web, I installed like the other one, other than it is on the WAN, I have both ports 80/10000 open in the router.

Any thoughts are much appreciated.

You're going to have to change the http port on the second VS02 on this network under the Network/Advanced TCP/IP tab. Your best bet is to assign static LAN IP's to each device and a different port. i.e:

DVR 192.168.1.10 http port 80

VS02 #1 192.168.1.20 http port 81

VS02 #2 192.168.1.30 http port 82

Set your router services and firewall to reflet the changes. Your DVR will always be accessable by typing in your WAN static IP and the Video Servers by typing in the WAN static IP followed by :81 or :82

Thanks Harrar for your help.

Just wanted to be clear, that the second vs-02 in being connected to via the web, by it's own IP address established by the internet provider. So I must maintain that address, but should I still change the port to maybe 82?

Thanks

Ok, I tried to change port, to 81 now I cannot connect to the server at all even over the web. I checked to make sure that port 81 was open. I can't even locally connect using a crossover cable to restore the port back to 80. I can ping it though, what could be blocking my access even locally?

I thought the DVR and both VS02's were on they same network. For this unit leave the port at 80

When you type in the address 192.168.1.XX:81 locally, you have no access at all?

make sure the ports are added to the windows firewall.

Ok, it is restored... I now know how to restore the video server from a factory reset.

Still unable to receive stream from video server at the dvr.

Did you configure the other VS02 in the Geovision software under Tools-General Settings-Add Camera/Audio-Install IP Camera? Are you getting a stream from the remote VS02?
