What to do when underground fiber lines fail!!

I was called to a job yesterday and I am stumped on what to do. I have searched the internet over and can not find a solution so I decided to post here.

 

I have 7 buildings all connected by a fiber line back to a central 8th building, each building has various CCTV to Fiber transmitters, and Fiber receivers (decoders) in the main building. However, somehow one of these fiber lines have failed (No, there isn't a backup line, and its not possible to run a new fiber line)

 

There is an older integral dvr in the main building, which can not be upgraded to work with a sentry system, so IP cameras are out of the question.

 

My question is can I use 2x media converters, one in the remote building with the failed fiber line to convert the fiber to Ethernet, run it across a wireless bridge, then convert the signal back to fiber in the main building? Or does anyone know a better more effective way of doing this?

I'd hunt around for any existing phoneline cable that could be used with baluns for the video first, but failing that, I'd look at using an Acti video-Ethernet encoder at the camera side (ACD-2100), and the Acti Ethernet-video decoder ACD-3100, and Ubiquiti NanoStation M5 wireless units to transmit the signal.

 

There are analog wireless video transmitters available, but if you've been used to the picture quality and reliability of fiber, you'll probably be disappointed in them.

 

This IS assuming an available clear line of sight between buildings, and a reasonable distance (the NanoStations I mentioned are good for 2 miles or so), or there are other solutions for longer range.

Use a fibre mux (ie multiple video channels on a single fibre).

You could get someone in with a meter to find the point of failure and repair it? It may be cheaper than switching everything out. Failure point could be at the termination. ELectronics are all right?

 

Most of the fiber problems we run into are with the media converters going bad.

Use some sort of encoder and decoders. Ubiquiti is definitely nice specially 802.11a.

 

I had an aerial cable go bad on me and instead of running new cable, I kust installed a P2P connection.

 

It has been a rock solid connection.
