JPEG DVR

Hi All, our 7 year old DVR recently gave up life so we asked a local installer in Bristol to fit and set up a replacement unit with a least the same performance on playback.

 

We run 3 builder merchants and on the trade counter we need high resolution due to some of the dubious customers we encounter.........

 

The installer( who has done lots of good work for us on alarms ect) fitted a 16CH Alien pro unit and he reassured me that these are taking over the planet......Anyway to cut a long story short, the playback quality really is long way behind our exisiting unit even tho its set up on D1....I cannot find any info on Alien unit and i would guess its a budget unit made in China.....Can anyone help reassure me ive not been ripped off.

 

Our old unit was a JPEG2000 model tho there is no manufacturer detalis on that one.......Can anyone advise if you can still get this unit in the UK....I think the Alien is going to have to take a flight!

i would check that it is recording on D1 and most likly will have a compression setting, ie need to set it on highest quality.

Guys, we ended up buying a Samsung SVR 1645 unit because of its networking qualities.....

 

The company also offered the JPEG 2000 units which they called the "dual codec" units but after somethought we decided to go down the samsung path......Nice bit of kit but playback does still not compare to JPEG!!

 

Apparently MAP Security are the sole importer of JPEG DVR's....very helpful guys indeed...I liked their "installer" approach! BUT we went for the Samsung

According to the specs on that Samsung it uses MPEG4 compression not MJPEG.

thats correct its not JPEG and the playback clearly demonstrates it....The JPEG is vastly superior!

 

BUT the Samsung is vastly superior to that pile of rubbish called the "alien pro" - The colours/ blockiness was appauling....In my opinion even the AVTECH gear is much better than the Alien.....

 

Next I'm onto cameras...will post for advice....

Did you set the alien to its highest quality compression settings when recording? That can significantly increase or decrease the quality sometimes. Just because you had it in D1 doesnt mean it is going to look top notch if its set at a real low compression quality. Blockiness is a sign of highly compressed video. I dont see why the installer would set it at low compression quality, so it may be a piece of junk after all. I'm glad the Samsung is working out for you though. I've never met a Samsung I didnt like.

You will struggle as you found out to find a dvr that will match JPEG2000 on playback quality

 

I have been using these for 8 years + and have tried all the big boys and the small ones.

I have found that an H.264 DVR from a reputable manufacturer will just shade the Jpeg2000 on playback.

 

 

Keep in mind that jpeg2000 is a still image wavelet coding standard, while H.264/AVC is a pure video coding standard.

I love the way manuf etc at Trade shows pump HD TV into the DVR's to demo, its not a real life testbed is it?

 

Can you tell me who these " reputable manufacturers " are ? as i havnt found any yet with their H264 claims and i've tried a lot in last year

Not really into debating with anyone - the above is from a peer reviewed paper examining the performance of H.264/AVC versus Jpeg2000.

 

I merely offered the info in response to the question. We are all at liberty to choose what works best for us.
