rory 0 Posted May 18, 2005 whats the name of that stuff that is kind of like decorative flex conduit, to hide the camera cables?? Is it called Liquid Tight Flex Conduit, and which one do we use?? Also, anyone use the Ganz housings in Salt Air Enviroments? This is going right on the beach. Or should I just stick to the GE ABS housings I have used in the past, and switch the screws to stainless steel .. thanks Rory
C7 in CA 0 Posted May 18, 2005 This stuff? I wouldn't call it decorative, but... Yeah, just call it non-metallic, liquid-tight, flexible conduit or similar. They should know what you mean. What are you running in it? With one Siamese I would use 3/4" IF you need to use a 90 degree fitting the 1/2" will be too tight. 1/2" is probably too tight according to the fill charts anyway. rory 0 Posted May 18, 2005 thanks .. is it easy to shorten, just cutting it, but still be able to use those ends? Its going to be used for RG59 siamese for some cameras, and also Ill need some for the ExtremeCCTV cables that goto the EX82s and the UF500s, they are pretty thin cable, something like RCA and 18AWG together in size .. And the big question, do they come with the ends or are they extra?
C7 in CA 0 Posted May 19, 2005 Yes the connectors install and remove easily. You buy those separately, and the ones you need. straight, 45 degree angle, 90 degree angle, etc. You may be able to buy it by the foot if you don't need a whole roll depending where you buy it (any decent hardware store) You can cut it with a razor blade, PVC cutters, whatever. 3/4" should be ok. The 1" would probably be required if you follow NEC conduit fill charts. But I doubt your housings will have 1" knockouts.
rory 0 Posted May 19, 2005 rememebr now i have to order all this from the US, they dont sell anything like this here, just the regular flex conduits.
C7 in CA 0 Posted May 19, 2005 OH, No home depot? I thought they were everywhere... Ok. Then I would go with 3/4" Non Metallic Liquid Tight Flexible Conduit. Then decide on straight or angled connectors. The angled don't seem as strong as the straight. But this stuff doesn't have a very tight bend radius, so the angled connectors come in handy. CSG 0 Posted May 19, 2005 You can also try places that sell Central A/C supplies. They sell those flex conduit setups for hooking up the outside compressors. They call them whip kits.
rory 0 Posted May 19, 2005 Ok thanks. I got one more question .. i know alot of electricians but they dont know much down here ... like DIY or anything other than what they do so i dont bother asking them anything ....anyway, i have a Square Aluminum/Iron (not sure) Pole, about 3x3 or something like that .. its not that thick material but i had to buy a special bit to drill the holes for the cable to go in. How do you do the holes so you can attach this to it? Drilling may be out of the question to make it threaded at least. Does it just have the ring you can put the end in, and screw the ring on from the inside to hold the end there? tanks agin .. Rory
rory 0 Posted May 19, 2005 You can also try places that sell Central A/C supplies. They sell those flex conduit setups for hooking up the outside compressors. C7 in CA 0 Posted May 19, 2005 Does it just have the ring you can put the end in, and screw the ring on from the inside to hold the end there? Yes. Every connector I have bought included the locknut and a rubber O-ring. You can even see them in the picture in my first post.
DataAve 0 Posted May 19, 2005 It is called sealtight (some call it liquidtight) and you use compression fittings to connect. It's basically flexable conduit. Make sure you get the PVC coated metal on the sealtight. The straight PVC has a tendency to deteriorate in the weather (especially the sun-it breaks it down). If the cam housing has no sealtight holes, you need to mount it to an outdoor box with 1/2" or 3/4" holes-make sure you silicone the hell out of it. From that 1/2" or 3/4" mounting box bring the seal tight down to a splice box (another outdoor box) and make your splices. It's a piece of cake, bud.
DataAve 0 Posted May 19, 2005 Some housings don't have knockouts (pelco ones we use, do). If not, just drill the 1/2" or 3/4" hole and attach the compession fittings to that with the sealtight and go right down to your outdoor box. Make sure you leave a "drip loop". Not too long, or it looks sloppy.

rory 0 Posted May 19, 2005 thanks, have you used any of the pelcos on the ocean, if so which ones held up the best. Ive used the GE Housings and they lasted, but screws rust quick. Plus they arent really vandal resistant. The ExtremeCCTV Ex82 has held up on the beach, but as they are adding 3 extra cameras, and to save buying another EX82, Im moving it inside the yard where they want an extra camera (its pitch dark), away from the ocean, moving a UF500 from the driveway to the beach side (still leaves 1 UF500 on the driveway cam), adding a wider beam and putting up a Exview Day Night Box Cam on the beach with a wider lens also, probably the GE. I was looking at the VideoTech Stainless steel housing: http://www.videotec.com/pages_27.html Anyone ever use it and know what the going rate is?? Also we are adding another DVMRe-CT as they are maxed out to 16 cams right now .. probably with a Keypad also. Tanks agin Rory
rory 0 Posted May 19, 2005 YEah and guess what, none of them ever heard of that type of conduit, they dont even sell RG59, nor have they heard of BNC connectors!! There is only one on the island, Taylor Industries that occasionally has BNC Twist ons (the cheap ones i might add that never work), and occasionaly RG59, also the cheap type. I know the owner by the way, they dont really sell them as they dont have a call for them, actually anything to do with CCTV. heck i gotto every hardware store on the island just looking for the right screw sometimes ... and when looking for a 12VDC power supply, only radio shack sells them, and its one of those multi voltage supplies .. and it costs like $25 .. trust me, it can be a realll headache When you do get the twist on BNC connectors they cost $7 each ..! I have to buy all my Siamese from the US, that costs maybe $500 landed for a 1000' roll.
DataAve 0 Posted May 19, 2005 The salt air gets everything-no matter what you use...even stainless, so don't got nuts. We even used Spectra 3 Domes on the water. Been there a 2 years and still going. Did a job over at Rikers Island, dead on the water. We have used regular "clam shell" Pelco Housings (EH3512/EH3515). Just silicone the crap out of it with good GE silicon and don't forget your drip loop, otherwise you will have a fish bowl.

Cooperman 0 Posted May 19, 2005 One trick you can try for protecting screw heads; if the screws are removable, fit a split plastic screw cap, and before you click the cover on, coat the entire screw head with 'Silicone Grease' (plumbers use it for sealing water components). It's messy stuff to work with, but it can make a big difference. Without it, as Data Ave rightly says, salt will eat away at anything metal.

I live with at least 1 tube ... yeah they sell them here .. just thought maybe the stainless steel housing would hold up as good as the stainless steel screws have .... I mean I havent had a problem in the past, just havent used any PTZs or vandal proof housings on the beach yet .. its just 90 feet from the water by the way, but during the hurrican season it is more like 10 feet ... and during the actual hurricane ... well i take them down if the client pays for it .. this one did the last 3 we had last year .. it was up, down, up, down ...... arghhhh, one after the other ..!
