Eleveator camera noise

Recommended Posts

We have two types of elevators ones that go up only five floors those work fine. then there's the other ones that go up like 30 floors, these ones I have problems with. They are Otis elevators that and the cameras were installed previously. I just started here and no one has any info on the cams or who is in charge or what was ran. By what I can see though is there the regular corner mounts with I wanna say 24 gauge or 18 gauge wire that are crimped into a connector that snaps in the camera. 4 wires vid+ and vid- than the other two fro power. The problem is when the elevator is standing still perfect picture, but when they move very static picture until it stops again. the main box is hooked up by the elevator equipment all I have to do is get my mini max wire put ends on them and run the wire home. but even at the main elevator box when I hook up my monitor to it same static pic when it moves. is there any solution? I don't care throw out anything and a whole lot to try out please? The wires are pre crimped at the camera so I cant ground in there to anything. Should I run my feed back home on a Baulim maybe?

Sounds to me like there is interference from the RF emissions of the motor (that moves the elevator).

Only thing I can think of is if the shielding for the signal is connected to a ground, to protect the center from the interference?

Hard to diagnose without more knowledge of how the camera is actually wired: is it using coax wire for the video feed? Or twisted pair? If twisted pair, is it using baluns? If you connect a monitor directly to the camera, does it still get noise? What is its power source - is there low voltage running the full distance from the DVR to the camera, or is there a 120V outlet on the car that's supplying a transformer?

it is twisted pair all the way down. voltage is feed from the car gear room in the basement. the cameras are funny when we usually buy new cameras we get the connectors to hook them up to the monitor but these were installed like 10 years ago an never got the connector. its not something i can rig up either it look like a dip switch with the 4 wires coming out. the feed at the bottom in the gear room is noisy. and then from there the feed is sent home which is of course the same (noisy) I think im gonna try and find away to ground it in the elevator room to see if it does anything like Birdman advised. I hope thats all it is too.

Hi Mecca. you have another problem when installing cameras in a lift and this also applies to installing on ships. you have a problem called frequency noise. (vibration) your body cant feel this in the lift but it will make your camera vibrate. so first go in the lift start it moving and hold your thum against the camera and see if your problem stops.

Can you tell if there are baluns at EITHER end? In the mechanical room, does the cable connect into coaxial cable at any point? If so, is it spliced directly, or is there some sort of "adapter" in between?

You could well be getting noise induced on the power feed - that's a LONG power run (30 floors... about 360'... double that because the traveler goes all the way up AND down). Most elevator cars have AC power available at the car, might want to see if there's an outlet on the roof that you can power the camera directly with an adapter.

Any chance of finding out the make/model of the camera? There's a SLIGHT chance that it has a built-in balun, but if not, then that's your problem: straight UTP for over 700' is just begging for noise.

.

Not surprising, but the important test is whether it's noisy directly at the camera - that will determine whether the problem is with the camera itself, or with the wiring.

Doubt it. He's talking about using shielded cable and grounding that shield... and probably assuming that the run is using coax. Since it's not, unless it's using shielded twisted pair, there's not really anything TO ground.

It sounds like you have a problem with the actual cable that goes from elevator to elevator machine room. Most important thing is to find out if the CCTV cable is isntalled within the elevator traveling cable or simply tie-wrapped on the outside of the traveling cable.

If its outside the traveling cable it much more likely to get damaged (maybe it will last 6 months maybe 6 years)
