Backing up 4GB

Recommended Posts

not related to DVRs so I posted it here.

I have this clients laptop with 4GB of data I need to get off of. Problem is, Nero doesnt recognise the DVD/CDRW, so I cant back up to CD. Any other ideas?? I could do local network but .. would take way too long i imagine, never tried that much.

I could "borrow" an external firewire or USB drive bay but id rather not ..

thanks

Rory

If you need to get off machine, hook it up with a cross over (to another computer) then burn.

Do what Data suggest, it will be painless and fairly effective. We use portable USB/Firewire drives with built-in backup software here and they work OK. I actually prefer Data's method, but the portable drives make it a no brainer for new employees and keeps procedures consistent.

Rory, I've run into the Nero won't work/ XP burner will problem before. Nero has a fix on their website.

Good suggestions so far, but what I typically do, especially if the qty of data is large is to pull out the HD, adapt it to regular IDE connection (simple adapter appx $10) and put it into another machine. I then back up the data to the local hard drive.

But the USB hard drive external bays are nice if you don't want to deal with shutting down the pc.

If you don't want to deal with opening up the laptop, crossover cable will do the trick.

But if you could solve the Nero problem for the customer, that's probably the best option - for you and the customer (unless you are doing a winreinstall).

just had so many issues before with DVD/CDRW drives in Dells, etc, when drag and drop then try to recognise in a regular CDRW or CD .. but this one was okay .. i dont do it for a living or I would have just used the USB/Firewire drive I should have had

I agree using CD's sucks, unless it’s just one or two. The crossover CAT-5 wire is very slow, unless you have gigabit Ethernet, which most people don't. I use Acronis True Image Software to Image files or the whole partition to an external hard drive.

True Image is great software package. It easily lets you mount an image file just as if it was a regular hard drive. Simply copy files out of the archive if you need them. Looks like a hard disk as far as Windows is concerned.

I bought a nice Venus DS3 enclosure that is small and very durable. If you think you might need to do something like that again it is worth the investment, if you haven't already done so, which knowing you Rory, you probably already have done something, but just in case…
