glycomed 0 Posted November 5, 2010 Hi guys, im looking to start off with basic 2 camera system for the front of my house. I have been having problems with car vandals. Ive done some reading and determined to start with a 2 CNB VCM-24VF domes, and a AVerDVR Hybrid NV3000 dvr card. at the moment my plans look like this . (the car is the big grey diamond shape and the red circles are the cameras) Do you think this system would be suited to see whats going during the day and night. the distance of the cameras is about 50-75' from my car. And if something were to happen would the quality be good enough to hand over to the police? also I live in the lower mainland B.C. Canada where it rains alot so would the domes be well off on there own? and does any one know any dealers that sell them in the lower mainland.
rory 0 Posted November 5, 2010 Weather wise the location under the eave/balcony is fine. Distance of 50'+ is a too far to get anything really useful at a wide FOV like 2.8mm or even 4mm. You could zoom the lens in to the max and it will work then, but you then loose the yard. Also if the criminals are on the other side of the car you wont capture them anyway. However with adequate lighting you should be able to get a general description of a suspect or vehicle, just wont get a face or licence plate. Really depends what you mean by "good enough to hand over to the cops", a wide FOV is for an overview mostly. If you need to watch the car closely you will really need a camera just for that. Soundy 1 Posted November 5, 2010 Wow... for a minute I thought that looked like a buddy's house that I'm helping with some cameras... in fact, it's almost an exact mirror image of his place! He's going for four or five of the VCM-24VFs as well, and a GeoVision system. Oh... we're in the GVRD too Drop me a PM, I can hook you up with some CNBs. glycomed 0 Posted November 5, 2010 wow thanks for the quick reply! yeah all those houses in Vancouver look the same, its the poor mans McMansion. in regard to lighting there is some street lighting so that should be a boost. my main concern is the car because after paying a 300 deductable to get my windshield fixed, 300 dollars for a camera just for the car isnt so bad. any ideas what I should go with? another cnb? and how about placement? rory 0 Posted November 5, 2010 here are a couple examples (bad cameras/lens though). Shows 4mm, and then 8mm.
glycomed 0 Posted November 5, 2010 Oh I see, I didnt think it would be that big of a zoom. I think for my purposes it should be sufficient and ill just buy a third camera for the car and focus it all the way to 10 mm. Thanks for the visual.
Soundy 1 Posted November 5, 2010 yeah all those houses in Vancouver look the same, its the poor mans McMansion. My wife calls them "BC Boxes" Zoomed right in to 10.5mm, at 50' away, that camera would cover about a 23' wide area, which should almost cover two cars... or gives you a fair bit of leeway in exactly where you park your car, and still allow you to see people milling around it. Your positions look pretty good, except the upper camera would be blocked by the tree from seeing the car. I'd probably look at using the lower position for a tight shot on the car, and the upper position for a wider shot of the yard and sidewalk. BTW, there are some other good examples of lens angles, here: http://www.ezcctv.com/cctv-lens-guide.htm
glycomed 0 Posted November 5, 2010 Thanks for the link! I know the cnb's don't come with the power supply. What do you think is a good power box for 2 cameras, I won't be running the wires that far probably 25' at most?
Soundy 1 Posted November 5, 2010 They're actually 12VDC or 24VAC, so either will do... something like this would work fine: http://www.rpelectronics.com/rpr-1201a6-n5-ac-dc-adapter-12vdc-1-6a.html
Birdman Adam 0 Posted November 6, 2010 Any "wall-wart" that puts out 12VDC or 24VAC, at 600 mA (each cam takes 300 max) or higher will do. It would be wise to get one thats fused. I think everyone has a pile of like 10 extra ones from past devices. I know I do!
glycomed 0 Posted November 6, 2010 What's a a wall-wart? Just another word for ac adapter? Should I paint it all black? because the backsplash of the wall is white you'd think it stick out more.
Sawbones 0 Posted November 6, 2010 At 50', you're going to need some zoom... no chance of getting details or any kind of facial ID without it. Consider getting a longer lens.
Birdman Adam 0 Posted November 6, 2010 Yea a wall wart is just an AC adapter. Often they are called this because they stick out like a wart on the wall.
