Intellex hard drive failing

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I recently purchased one of these rack mountable used online version3.2 i think and now its starting it shuts off and i'm getting pri master s.m.a.r.t failure message hit f4 to resume.

it looks like the primary drive is partitioned (15 GB for windows, 218 GB for storage)

i received no manuals or anything but am guessing i need to clone this drive before it dies completely

How easy is this to do and can i clone a partitioned drive like this?

Also, if i wanted to upgrade the size of the drive, how do i go about it?

thanks for any replies.

Looks like your primary drive is on its way out... SMART message comes from your bios, so it is identifying that there is a problem with your main hard drive.

Duplicate your first partition and make sure the sector is active - there are many different ways you can do this. Once you have the new hard drive ready, plug it in and make sure it boots and then Intellex works as intended.

Assign rest of the partition of the drive as storage and make sure Intellex recognizes through Intellex function called driveconfig.

Since you have version 3.2, it means that your OS is Win2000 and this is the most stable Intellex available. You can add more drives and have up to 4.0TB internal storage... just make sure you have high capacity power supply and all the system fans are working to reduce heat built up...

More support is here: http://intellex.us/intellex-documentation

Any other questions, let me know.

Thanks for the reply. How do I make sure the sector is active? Not sure I follow you??

I think 4TB is a little overkill (for my use anyway), as I could do with 1TB and have plenty of storage left over.

Would 2-500 GB hard drives need a new power supply?

Thanks again

There are many disk duplicating options - Acronis for one works great: http://www.acronis.com. There are disk copy utilities from Wester Digital and other as well that work fine. If you are using older style of disk copy, it was necessary to make sure that sector that you deem necessary as system slice had to be marked "active", but recent more known copier already perform that.

You can use two 500GB drives... or one 1TB, etc, SATA or PATA drives... does not matter how to get there. Your maximum internal storage is 4.0TB... Just replace the power supply with at least 500W supply with 80%+ efficiency (don't use some cheap power supply for under $20), and make sure route power supply cable tightly away towards front of the case and away from the motherboard.

Change all system fans and if possible, even change the processor fan. I will suggest to change internal PATA or SATA cables too. Re-route cables not to block air flow and are away from processor fan.

Clean all the dust from inside of the box using dust cleaner.

While doing all this, add some more RAM, lets say at least 500MB or better yet, 1GB. This will add on the performance. Lastly, increase your virtual memory (sometimes also called swap file size) to 1.5 times to your RAM size.

Buy CD or DVD cleaner and clean your drive too.. over time it collects dirt and damages head of this device.

I think by the time you go through all these steps, your Intellex will work as good as new..

Good luck and let us know how is the performance when complete.

Thank you for the tips. I tried hooking up the hard drive to another computer via a usb-IDE adaptor and

it doesn't even get recognized. The slave drive of the Intellex seems fine when I hook that up.

Now what? Am I screwed? I bought this online last year used as-is thinking it was a good deal.

You can't move this hard drive to another machine using USB-IDE adapter - even if so, you must make sure that your machine recognizes this device before it can recognize the drives.

Pickup another machine and make sure it has operating system... connect your Intellex hard drive and another fresh new hard drive to this machine via your ATA or SATA cable... go to bios and verify if your system recognizes all drives, including Intellex drive. Boot into operating system. Install your duplication software - i.e. Acronis or many other available.

Before your start duplication, make sure your new drive has 15GB slice partition...

Duplication software should have ability to duplicate from "source" to "destination"... Make sure your Intellex partition is your "source" and new drive is your "destination". Run the software and make sure it duplication sections without any problems...

Once duplication is complete, take the new hard drive and install it with the Intellex... and it should boot into Intellex without any problems. The remainder of the hard drive (above 15GB slice) can be used for storage...

What I did is hook the intellex hard drive up to my home computer and copied a true image of the intellex drive. Can't I just use Acronis to copy the image on to the new drive and then install new drive in the intellex? I've already partitioned the new drive.

Thanks again for your help.

Yes, you can.

Ok thanks. the drive had 2 bad sectors found, hopefully that won't cause me any problems.

Should I copy the image on the 2nd partition (218 GB)

This would take me forever. I was hoping intellex would see the drive and automatically copy whatever files it needs.

I'm not concerned with losing the footage already on the drive.

Could I just delete all the avi's in the database, then copy and paste the 3 or 4 directories in the 2nd partition?

Thanks again for all your help

Just run CheckDisk and it will correct this problem

NO... second partition is your storage... just format it through Windows "Disk Management" and then use Intellex DriveConfig function to assign this second partition for storage.

NO, you can not - all the directories and files around them are tightly integrated with Intellex. If you have no use for the video on the older drive, then you can scrap it...

Looks like you are using another 250GB drive - drop in another drive i.e. 500G or 750G and increase your storage.. just make sure either use DriveConfig function to combine it with Intellex (externally) or within Intellex you can add this extra storage - it will work regardless which one you want to use.

Good luck!

Thanks again for all your help
