dnaparty 0 Posted November 17, 2010 Hello, I am new to cctv installation and setup, I have been reading abit online and looking at some systems that come complete with 4 cameras and dvr box. It looks like they all run the cameras of a coax cable with bnc plugs, my question is "is the power for the camera also sent down the coax or is it a seperate transformer/plug?" I am assuming that the camera might get its power down the coax just like some device get there power from POE using cat5. As this is my first installation of this type any tips/tricks would be gratefully accepted, also I have been looking at the systems available on a well know website(sounds like a forest) and have seen a with 4 carmeras and dvr and monitor etc., thank you for taking the time to read, all replys appreicated. Soundy 1 Posted November 17, 2010 There are still some systems that run power-over-coax, but they're few and far between...
SEANHAWG 1 Posted November 18, 2010 I would stick with the standard cameras that have seperate power and video feed. There are a few ways you can run video and power to your camera. You can use what is known as Siamese Cable which has the Coax cable and Power Wires attached to each other which makes installation an ease instead of using seperate coax and seperate power wires. Another option is to use Cat5 cable with the use of Video Baluns. You can run video and power over one Cat5 cable, but you can sometimes run into problems running power over Cat5 on long cable runs. The Video Baluns are connected near the camera and it is what is used to connect the Cat5 cable to your power and video connections on you camera. Whichever you decide to do is up to you. Being a newbie, it would probably easier for you to use Siamese Cable, but dont think that that is an inferior choice as there are plenty of professionals who use siamese cable today. Its just whatever you prefer.
