rconaway 0 Posted November 22, 2010 Is there a document or program that shows various frame rates/resolutions/compression for Mobotix? I contacted them and have done some searching but now luck. I'm also trying to figure out how much storage you need on a camera for different lengths of recording. Any help would be appreciated.
Soundy 1 Posted November 22, 2010 The bandwidth needed for a given framerate/resolution/codec won't vary substantially from one manufacturer to the next; any bandwidth calculator should give you a fair approximation. As far as storage, there are just way too many variables for a generic calculator to give you a truly accurate estimation - besides just the above, there's the "compressibility" of a given scene to consider - something lower-contrast with less complexity will compress better than complex, higher-contrast scenes. The amount of motion in a scene will affect how much it will compress, besides just its effect on motion-activated recording. All that said, there's a pretty good "generic" calculator available from www.jvsg.com... give it a try, but take the results with a proverbial grain of salt. Figuring out real storage requirements is as much a voodoo art and will always vary with a specific installation.

As an example, the storage requirements for my motion recording cameras go way up on rainy days and when there are low-flying fast-moving clouds. rconaway 0 Posted November 23, 2010 Thanks guys, I understand what you are saying. Most of my experience is with Axis and I use H.264 exclusively nowadays. However, Mobotix was touting it's proprietary compression on MPEG-4 but didn't give a lot of details. I was really after what size card I needed in the camera to carry 2 hours of recording in VGA mode with 30fps.
Soundy 1 Posted November 23, 2010 Just go with the biggest one you can afford... once again, the actual space used will vary with the complexity and contrast of the scene, and the amount of movement in it (even if you're recording constantly). If you find you have a lot of wasted space, you can always put a smaller card in and keep the big one for something else.

rconaway 0 Posted December 4, 2010 Thank you for the information. The www.jvsg.com site isn't working but Axis has a pretty good calculator also.
