System res. question

I know the difference in between cif and d1 but in my application, which would work better from your expertise?

4 cameras are recording and a distance of 4 to 8 feet and the picture I need it to view is no more then 3x3 feet. I would like the recording to be able to read two inch high letters

 

Would a CIF res be better in this configuration or would I need D1?

The only advantage that CIF would have would be that it may be at a faster frame rate but it just depends on your DVR, some can record at D1 at 30 FPS. Otherwise, if its the same frame rate, D1 is always better and there would be no advantage at all.
