Need System

Recommended Posts

Hi

This is the first time I have wirtten in a forum.

I live in Detroit Michigan. recently I bought alot of supplies & tools to fix my house. Then I was broken into. They took everything. They have broken into my house 4 times. I`am sure it is one of my close neighbors.

I bought a simion 3 alarm system. I`am still hooking it up. I also bought a samsung 12" cctv system from SAM`s club. It didn`t have enough cameras.

I found that out, because one night I acted like I had left so the neighbors thought I had left but I went back in the back way. I seen the people next door going to their garage in and out most of the night. they were evading my cameras and trying to break into my basement. The dog was going nuts. I triped and made a noise, then they new I was in the house so they left it alone. So I needed more cameras. So I went back to SAMS club seen the 14" web system (remote viewing & e- mail) I didn`t know that was possible. I bought it and bought samsung DVR. Hooked it up was on the phone with GVI security for 3 hours trying to get my e-mail from the ststem. They never could get it working right. Whay they ended doing was haveing it e-mail them then forwarding it to me.I`am going to take it all backto SAMS CLUB, but need new system. I found this one on EBAY need to know if it is any good?

I'm not a pro in this field, and I'm not familiar with this unit, but... from the description it looks like pace of crap:

First thing I don't like about this system: recording only 50 FPS total. it's way too low for 16 cams. and 480fps for live viewing means nothing in your case.

then cameras.. they also don't look decent: there are almoust no spec. stated.

and price.. you can't get anything decent with 16 cameras for 2000$

IMHO in your case you need 8 cameras at most (IMHO 4 would do the trick).

buy 4 good day/night cameras (B/W could do the trick also ), 4 or 8 channel DVR, mount cameras covering main points of entrance. Make them invisible: anyone with flashlight could blind even the best camera… if they know that no-one is monitoring them and they know where camera sits

Just be prepared to drop 1200$-2000$ for DVR unit, and 150$-500$ for each camera.

Or you can do it “the poor man wayâ€

That system looks like junk. The cams are crappy 1/4 cams.

I think you need a better dog, not a dvr. If they are ignoring the dog while tunneling into your house!

Its a HiSharp DVR, 30fps recording in high quality mode. Software is generic used on alot of OEM DVRs out of Asia, nothing special. Forget remote playback as slow and locks up the DVR sometimes. Reviews on this forum somewhere under DVRs, from a year ago I think. Compared to other DVRs for the price its not worth it. AvTech is 1/2 the price and just as or better than this DVR. This DVRs Remote Software is somewhat better, as far as quality goes anyway. Stability though the AvTech is better. Otherwise there are other Stand alones, costing more though, or PC based if you can get a spare PC. PC based will give you more features.

Like the others said, the cameras are very cheap. Trust me Casinos dont use cameras like those

I wouldnt mess around with the inside unless you want to. If so, then maybe 1 or 2 cameras in the general areas.

Depending on the layout of your home, that would really be thing to decide what cameras to use, as well as lighting at night. Use domes if you want to make it harder for them to damage, look at WizKid:

http://www.wizkidoptotech.com

Color where there is alot of light, and BW or Day Night in the areas that are dark at night. Use Motion Detector lights in those areas, cheaper than Infrared, which you would need some Real Infrared Lighting, not the ones on those cameras in that Ebay sale.

Email notification is actually a pain in the butt. Especially when using DVRs motion, unless you tie in your Burglar alarm system into the DVR and use that for motion. Such as the motion detectors in the house, or Yard Beams, Door/Window Contacts, etc. Otherwise using DVR Motion Detection, and outdoors, you can get alot of email.

Get yourself some RG59 18AWG Siamese Cable, and some weatherproof electric gang boxes for the outdoor cameras where there is nowhere to hide/protect the connections, and a tube of caulking.

Best recommendation at this point, after you have already spent so much time and seem to really have a problem, is contact a local CCTV professional, and I dont mean one that does 20 different other things. Or, take some photos of the house, and email it to me and I can make a diagram for you, and post that on here for others to comment.

the Divar is decent, but pricey. If you're going into that price range, a GE DVR would be a better choice. The DISS I cant comment on. Ive heard of it, never known anyone that used it though.

The AvTech 16 channel is the ultimate cheapest 16 channel Stand alone DVR. It actually still does give you email or ftp on motion, but its motion is very basic.

Expansion, would need to use a PC based DVR for that.

Ill PM you my email.

welcome slrpro02

Sorry to hear you've been having problems.

Being the wrong side of the pond, I wouldn't be able to add anything on what would be your best choice for suitable equipment. However, one thing that perhaps you ought to think about before you rush out and buy some new kit, is what exactly are you trying to achieve.

If you've been hit a number of times, and they are obviously not deterred from trying again, do you 1) want to install a totally covert CCTV system, so that if you gather evidence, there is a chance that at best it may be possible to recover some of your stolen property, or at worst, the authorities will be able to deal with your unwelcome visitors.

or 2) if you do decide to install equipment simply as a deterrent (i.e. visible cameras), don't be surprised if further attempts are made to break in, after the cameras have been attacked / disabled.

If I were in your shoes, I know what I would want to do .....

Since your neighbors seem so predictable, I think you need to install some booby-traps around your house. A nice dead-fall pit near your basement door or window would work. Another good idea would be an electrified door handle or bare wire sticking out where they would put their hands.

I looked at the existing cameras breifly for him, online. Seemed like 8 cameras are atually more than he needs, or they are placed in mostly the same areas. Also, the neighbors house, from what I can tell, are side by side with theirs, like 8 feet away or so. Thats what it looked like at least. There didnt seem to be any fence blocking the 2 houses at some areas. And the dog was running arounfd having alot of fun ... so Id say a full perimter alarm is out of the question, at least as far as the side areas go. Though he could alarm his doors and windows, and maybe a beam across the front porch, some motion detectors also, and a couple Loud Sirens with Strobe Lights, one on either side of the home, Front and back corners.

Id say definately take back the existing system, camera images look horrible, and the DVR is a dual quad not a mux. Its 4 BWs and 4 colors, all washed out, and cant see much with the BWs, not sure how the night image is though. I would get the new system first though, and just plug and play, then think about moving them to better locations, so you wont have any down time, and the wire is already run to those locations. I imagine its using RCA cables, ready made, with BNC ends or similar? If so, get some RG59 18AWG siamese if you are going to re run, and you may still want to replace the existing wire anyway to obtain a better image.

Would need to see it at night to comment on what cameras to use.

As for the DVR, if you really want to save money and get something running at this time, then the AvTech is a good choice. They sell that in some of those Sams Club type places also, normally the version without LAN though. But if you want something more, better remote video, check out the WebGate or Hunt 8 channel DVR. Need to know your approx location to be able to recommend someone maybe from this forum that can get you a good system. if you are PC literate and feel okay building a PC, then may be worth your while getting a PC card, such as the Iview, Geo, etc. Id buy it legite though, so its not a waste of time and money for future updates. You definately need more than 4 cameras for that location though, from what I can tell by the size and layout of the home.

Been reading a little about dvr`s. My cable company is Comcast they have DHCP address`s will this work with a DVR?

I dont want to have to look up a new address every so often.

Also when I`am viewing remotely on a PC how can I record for long periods of time. Do I need another DVR?

My security system (simon3) will be hooked up shortly. Waiting on AD-2000 to get here. The simon 3 can be hooked up to the internet.

What cameras would be best to hide inside the house?

I figure they will want to destory the dvr if they can. what can I do to stop that?

What if they cut the power? Is there a battery backup system for the dvr & cameras?

The samsung 14"web system only lets you record 10min. @ a time from your remote viewing.

Also finally got my laptop working.

I don`t know a much about PC`s never built one, but if I could save money building one instead of buying a DVR I would.

I read what rory said that I only need 8 camers, but I think I need that many outside, then what about inside. I figure when they come this time they will be wearing mask`s. aleast untill they think they got the recording device, buy the way they wont get the real one.

Yes, depends on the DVR though, whether you can enter a name or have to enter an IP. Most PC based DVRs will let you use a name, while only a select stand alones will do so.

Also when I`am viewing remotely on a PC how can I record for long periods of time. Do I need another DVR?

Any DVR worth mentioning, will not interfere with your local recording, while you are viewing it remotely.

What cameras would be best to hide inside the house?

Maybe some Smoke Detector cameras? GE has a full line of hidden cameras, check out their VALUE line, I use their hidden smoke detector camera all the time. Also they have some working hard wired Motion Detector cameras, which cost a little more but are also very neat.

I figure they will want to destory the dvr if they can. what can I do to stop that?

Hide it Or you can buy some sought of lock box, depending on whether it is a PC or a Stand alone. Also, hide it and put a VCR up somewhere with a cheap monitor or Tv with a couple of the cameras into that, so they think that is the real thing.

What if they cut the power? Is there a battery backup system for the dvr & cameras?

Only a UPS, or you can buy a generator but that costs money. Cameras you can get a Multiple Output Power Supply like from Altronix, and connect a 12V Rechargable battery to it, which will give you a couple hours or so, depending on the type of cameras used.

I figure when they come this time they will be wearing mask`s. aleast untill they think they got the recording device, buy the way they wont get the real one.

Definately get the alarm hooked up. Not sure about the Simon but once you can add some motions, door contacts, and even if you want to do something with the windows. You may want to check to see if the Simon can handle a loud siren (20-30watt) also, if not, if you want a loud siren you would need a seperate power supply, battery, and relay (or the panel may have a relay built in).

Once again, if you are unsure see if you can contact a professional in your area to take a look.

I don't know if you have found the DVR you are looking for but the NetMaster DVR MN-5000 series is very nice. I have a 2000 series installed at my house and recorded playback is sick. Very easy to use. I have installed a lot of the Netmasters and can get you contact info if you wish.

Sorry to hear about the quality of the playback. Hope it gets better.

Meanwhile, it would be good if you could provide a link to the DVR you describe.
