Hi ive been looking at what a good lens would be for a arecont 5105. need to be between 3-5mm and its a indoor camera with quite a bit of light. Ive looked at a few and not sure what to go with. seen a few that are IR, day and night but im not sure if you can use a IR lens on a NON ir camera (sorry im sorta new to this), its a bit confusing being that camera is a 5 megapixel and there is few lens' that are rated to 5 megapixel.

 

Any information would be great. Thanks

By "non-IR camera" I assume you mean that the camera's IR cut filter is fixed in place; if so, the answer to your question is yes. Of course, you'll be paying extra for the IR-correction capability of the lens that you'll be unable to use, so it's best to find a non-IR-corrected lens if you can.

Bosch has a great document explaining a lot about various CCTV specs, including the difference between standard and IR-corrected lenses (see page 3 of the above doc).

 

Like dvarapala says, you CAN use an IR-corrected lens on any camera; there's just no point in the extra expense if the camera is filtering the IR anyway.

 

IR-corrected lenses aren't limited to IR-LED-equipped cameras, either. True-Day/Night cameras need them to correct for IR's different focal plane that can result in poor focus when the camera is in night mode.

Thanks for the reply wire guys. Looking at the rainbow lens' doesnt show anything more than 2 megapixel in a 3-8ish mm range. unless im blind .

 

The tuss lens' look not too bad, currently looking for a distrubutior for those and see what availablity is like

Have you looked at fujinon yet?

 

 

This one from Kowa is IR corrected and fairly expensive but has good resolution

I bought 2 of the Rainbow 4.5-10 lenses you mentioned for use with 2MP Arecont cameras. I later ended up with an Arecont 3MP dome camera. To my surprise, it came with a lens identical to my Rainbow lens. As best I can tell by looking at photos, the Arecont 5MP dome cameras also come with this lens. Arecont also sells this lens: http://www.arecontvision.com/index.php?section=product&subsection=product_details&product_id=49

 

So either Rainbow is under-rating this lens, or Arecont is including an insufficient lens with it's 3MP and 5MP dome cameras.

Although its my understanding they also adjust for focus shift which will still happen on a Varifocal camera used in a day night application even if it has a fixed IR Cut filter?

Rory, take a look at that Bosch document I linked above - they describe quite clearly what "IR correction" does in a lens. Nothing to do with "focus shift".

Yeah I realize what the IR correction is for, but what i meant was that the IR lenses are typically what we call Day Night lenses. Like Tamron have what they call IR lenses, which have IR Correction and adjust for focus shift between visible and infrared light. While Fujinon just calls them Day Night lenses. Question is though, does this also help the DOF focus shift? The lens manufacturers are not clear on this it seems, they speak all about IR now.

 

BTW the information in their document is not 100% accurate, not all color cameras have IR cut filters, thats something that is added to the camera at the discretion of the manufacturer.

No. That phenomenon is purely a function of physics: larger aperture = lower DOF. That's nothing to do with IR light.

True.... but not overly relevant in this case.

Don't get Areconts MPL varifocal lenses. Man I fought with that for hours and still can not get a distortion free image as well as I can't get the image to be clean. The image out of the ACTi ACM7411 they have kicks butt compared to the image on the Arecont.

 

I called them today and said I used there megapixel lens which is a cheap MP lens I guess. I told them about distortion around the edges and the problem I'm having with focusing and getting a clear image. They said try a 2/3" lens and make sure it's fixed. ARGH! Fixed is tough cause the calc shows I need a 10.67mm lens. I would go 10 but 8 will be too wide and higher than 10 is too narrow.

 

It's gotta be this darn lens causing the unclear image. It's at a gas station and I can't get the brick pylons to show clean lines, they look fuzzy. I played with focus for almost 15 minutes and just no where to get it clear. Gotta be an optics issue, I can't figure out what else it could be because I have seen nice Arecont 5105 still shots and they were really nice.

 

Arecont tech said to try lenses by Computar or Fujinon. I looked at Thiea but I don't need that wide and I don't need that much VF range.

Could also be the sensor is not aligned correctly. Have a job right now with 26 5MP and 10 10MP Arecont box cameras. 22 4MM 2/3 lenses, 4 Theia 183 lens, 1 Theis 9-40mm and 9 4.5-10MM lenses. Some cameras we can get fully focused and some we can't not matter how much time we spend.

Which lenses are your 4.5-10mm? Are they the Arecont lenses? I do have two 5105's at thsi customer I could try the other one to see if I can get the image the way I need. Supposed to be nice tomorrow maybe I'll swap them to see.

 

If you can not get them focused do you just send them back? Seems like almost eveytime I order Arecont cameras I get a bad one.

seems distortion on edges is common problem for av cameras...after hearing comments of our guys recently installed up to hundred 3 mpx cameras i got used to it...

I tested the KOWA LMZ3510-IR and the Computar AG3Z3112FCS-MPIR that came with my Vivotek IP8151 1/3" 1.3MP camera.

 

The Kowa is a less sharp, in particular in the corners, but also in the center. It is advertised as 5MP 1/2", but in fact does not meet the much lower camera specs. It is also much more expensive.

 

The Computar is better, sharp all the way to the corners. The only downside is the flimsy plastic thread, you have to be careful mounting it.
