mtbvert 0 Posted March 15, 2011 Hi all, I'm new into CCTV tech, though very familiar with computer technology, and have a few questions about a setup a friend, Bob, wants me to install. Basically Bob has an Osprey nest in his back yard, about 25 ft high up on a pole. He wants to be able to monitor and record the activity of the birds for his own interest, as well as for his grandchildren and maybe some friends. Here's the layout, I'll post a picture when i get into work tomorrow, the nest is along a bulkhead about 160 ft from the house, with nothing around it which is higher than it. About 60 ft down the bulkhead is an outlet. To avoid the hassle of trenching the entire length of the back yard, i have decided to go with an IP camera utilizing a Powerline Ethernet setup to take advantage of the existing outlet, i may tap off that outlet and run an outlet to the nest pole itself. I have also decided on the Panasonic BL-C140 camera, it fits his budget well and seems to be very well reviewed, not worried about night viewing. It will be mounted onto a vertical support which extends above the nest and angled away. I guess i am looking for insight on this setup and if i have overlooked anything critical. In the mean time i am going to search the forums for recording software that works on a Mac and is fairly simple to operate.
tomcctv 190 Posted March 15, 2011 Hi. mtbvert would be nice to see some footage once you have done your install. videoing in the wild is hard to do at the best of times and many people get it wrong with what type of camera they use. you will have a 50/50 chance of the birds going if you change there enviroment. the Panasonic with the weather box is 5in x 5in and that is big to a bird. take a look at the axis camera same wiring setup and will go into a mac with there software for recording. and the camera is the size of your thumb. http://www.axis.com/products/cam_m7001/

mtbvert 0 Posted March 15, 2011 Tomcctv, thank you for the suggestion, Bob and I were discussing the fact that the camera may spook the birds, that Axis one looks perfect. I will be sure to show post some footage of the cam when it goes up. Below is an aerial view of the yard i referred to in the OP.
