LittleScoobyMaster 0 Posted April 22, 2011 I'm looking for a high-sensitivity microphone that can hear across the street. This would be so that when the neighbors across the street are comitting drug deals, I would know when to call the police to go investigate. It would help if it were shaped like an outdoor ornament of some kind (or a big flower or something). A wireless camera built inside would be a nice added feature as well. I could send the feeds to my GV600 system. Don't want it to look like an obvious parabolic microphone or anything though. Any good microphones for this purpose? Preferably wireless. Also, if anyone has any real life stories whereby you have used surveillance equipment to get drug dealers busted, I'd like to hear the stories as perhaps they would inspire me. thanks
Soundy 1 Posted April 22, 2011 Audio surveillance tends to be much more restricted than video surveillance in most jurisdictions - in some, it's not admissible as evidence, in some it's illegal altogether. You should check on the laws in your area before proceeding with this. I found this in relation to the D of C: http://www.rcfp.org/taping/states/dc.html

People who wish to stop crimes get bigger penalties than drug dealers who sell thousands of dollars worth of illegal drugs every week. I also like the wording of that one. It's like, it's illegal unless it becomes public. Crazyness. "However, disclosure of the contents of an illegally recorded communication cannot be punished criminally if the contents of the communication have “become common knowledge or public information.” D.C. Code Ann. § 23-542" So like, does this mean you could say "Officer, I was going to release these recordings to the public", and then not have to pay the fine? Strange law indeed. Kinda like those anal sex laws they have in some states.

Numb-nuts 1 Posted April 23, 2011 A very dangerous prospect, this is what Law enforcement are paid for. I am amazed you have to do this. Surely if you told police they could mount their own surveillance? I am not making any claims to know how drug dealers behave but from the surveillance video shot by law enforcement and released for TV, I believe these dealers are easy to spot visually by their actions. If you have time keep a log of the comings and goings and together with a few choice video clips, present it to police to encourage them to mount an operation. What you are proposing is very dangerous especially if discovered, you could place yourself and your family in serious danger. I wouldn't risk it. The thought of doing it is very appealing but these are known to be amongst the dangerous people in society. Think and then think again, don't do it. Ask police what you could do to assist them without endangering your family and self. Tell a family friend who you spoke to in the police dept.

The author of this thread needs to read the above post again. OP: I applaud your willingness to get involved, but you may not fully appreciate the kind of people you're dealing with here... people have been killed for less than what you're planning. I'd involve the police... and be especially careful if you have a family. I don't necessarily mind risking my own life (done it many times, in fact), but my family is another matter. If these drug dealers are the typical scum that does this kind of business, they'll have no qualms about targeting/retaliating against your wife/kids while you're at work.
