Any ideas on how I make CCD Camera connections waterproof?

Recommended Posts

I've just bought myself a 4 camera CCTV kit with a network DVR, from CPC.

The instructions say that the cameras are waterproof and I've checked out their spec, IP65, on Wiki

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_Code

Even though the cameras are waterproof, the cable connections are not, which is a bit of a bugger, to say the least.

Here is a similar camera to mine

And a link to the cable with attachments

http://cpc.farnell.com/watchguard/rca4chloom20m/cable-bnc-power-lead-20m/dp/SR07444?crosssellid=SR07...

I don't particularly want to drill big holes through my wall just so that I can feed the camera cable back into the house as the hole would have to be 15mm by 35mm at the very least. I would then have to fish two connectors through the cavity wall which is wider than the cable.

Anybody got any ideas, products or suggestions on how I can seal the cable to the camera?

Cheers

Ideally, run them into a waterproof box... short of that, I'd squeeze a little dielectric grease (often sold in auto-parts stores as "battery post grease" or "tune-up grease") into the connections (to keep water out and prevent corrosion), then seal them up with some REALLY TIGHT windings of quality PVC tape, or some heat-shrinkable PVC tape, or my personal favorite, "Brush-On Electrical Tape":

A waterproof box design would be a good idea.

Don't suppose you could suggest any?

Cheers

I'd just use a standard jbox and seal it with silicon.

We use heat shrink tubing that has the thermoplastic adhesive on the inside. This stuff works so well it is designed for direct burial of high voltage cables. Here is a link that shows what the stuff looks like, but I don't know anything about this company and am not making any recommendations of where to buy the tubing.

Isn't he looking to seal the cable plugs? If so, then heat shrinking cable covers arent really the best way to go for that, particularly if you want an easy removal of the camera for maintenance. I suppose a siliconed jbox isn't that fantastic either. Guess it depends on where the cable is running, whether he's going to run conduit or just nail it to the roof.

True. I think one has to assess what he really wants to accomplish here. Most liquid tight boxes with the appropriate fittings and conduit are more than adequate for the task. As Matt pointed out the silcone grease does wonders for keeping moisture and water out of fittings, which we use. The OP was asking about sealing the connections, which when the camera is setup should never be touched again unless there is a problem. This heatshrink is easy to deal with should you need to gain access. Just score a line with a utility knife and heat up and it will split open like an over ripened watermelon and can be pulled off. Realistically, I never had many times where I had to open up a sealed connection other than to upgrade cameras. Of course, many find that using 3M electrical tape is fine for keeping water out of connections. Use what you feel works best for you are your customer's needs.

Only problem I've found with heat shrink is finding some that will fit over a BNC, and still shrink enough to seal against the coax. I figure you'd need at least a 3:1 for standard RG59... forget even trying with that thin pre-made stuff... or for that matter, the tails coming off most cameras.

That's not a problem at all. I have a wide assortment of heat shrink tubing that has an ID or 2" and smaller. Here's stuff we used for 500MCM cable that has a native ID of 2" and can shrink down to 0.63". Raychem makes some killer tubing that performs well. I wouldn't use anything else for direct burial or underground junction boxes.

Thank you for all your replys, they are much appreciated.

In the end I found some small cheap waterproof junction boxes from B&Q with IP66 rating.

thats they way I do it, I leave the bottom open being sure to leave enough wire for a drip point for water. yet to fail.

I found some on the AliExpress Site...China.

https://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/0.html?orderId=84102944521734&productId=32806795384.

It will fit over the RJ45 connector without cutting the cable.

This one is a pigtail. The product is called a RJ45 PoE Injector Female DC12V Input Connector Plug Power Over Ethernet Outdoor Waterproof Adapter Cable for Network IP Camera.

I have not received it yet, but should work fine.
