Can I use 2.5 inch SATA hard drive instead of 3.5 inch?

Recommended Posts

I have a QC444 coming in next week.

I am wondering if I can install a 2.5 inch drive instead of 3.5 inch?

I see there is a 12volt power supply and 3.5 inch are 12volt but 2.5 inch are 5 volt, so would it even work?

It occurs to me since it has usb ports, there must be 5v made on the motherboard - but maybe it's only at very low amperage?

The idea is power savings since 2.5 inch only use 2 watts and 3.5 inch use four times that (and it's on 24/7 365)

Thanks for any info!

Would be hard to make a "wrong" power connection, as both drive types should use the same SATA data and power connectors. Certain pins on the connector are designated for 3.3V, 5V, 12V and ground, so they can't really get mixed up.

I'd say try it - worst case, the DVR's power connector doesn't have the 5V source and the drive won't spin up.

the DVR only consumes about 25 watts anyway

that sata power is the only power coming off the board though.

If you dont use the right HDD, it might not perform well.

And while on power saving, if one enables all the extra features on a camera the camera will draw more current, over a longer distance this can degrade the image quality.

also when you open detection recording mode, how much power can save like that?

really worth to take that risk?

There is also the matter of heat.

For 24/7 continuous recording there is a difference between 2 watts and 8 watts.
