Numb-nuts 1 Posted June 11, 2011 At home I have four cameras installed. There is one in the porch, one in the front door one at the eaves of the house about 3.5 m high and of course my beloved Xvision dome that has never worked since day one and is still in the process of being repplaced. I know you have most of you seen hundreds of cameras but I just wanted to show mine as I am very happy with the results. The are tidy and I just wanted you to see them as an example of my work. The spikes ion the dome are to stop pigeons roosting there, I've seen a few feathers but never a pigeon sitting there, I have even seen a pigoen attenpting to perch there but thinking better of it after getting a few plastic spikes up the jaxie. The dome housing you see is empty as the unit is away at the manufacturer, I'm awaiting a replacement.

I like the front porch enclosure, we have something similar in the hallways at work in the ceiling and no one ever notices them.

Numb-nuts 1 Posted June 12, 2011 Looks great - I love the one in the door!! Thanks for the comments guys It is very useful, and even when the door is open it can still view a person standing at the door because of it's wide angle of view. The front door-view camera was a commercially available package, and performance is not that great, but better than nothing. The lens has a very wide angle, something like 110 deg and the distortion is minimal. You can actually buy the lens that looks like a door-viewer (see below) and attach it to a low light mini bullet camera. A 19 mm hole is drilled and the whole assembly passed through the door and secured using a hose clamp. To make it look tidy at the rear of the door, it's covered by a junction box on the rear of the door which holds the connections and balun. Looks as tidy as I can manage to make it. What I didn't mention is that whenever I fit a camera to brickwork, like the dome and the external housing, I always make a template out of 1/2 inch plywood, I use this to mark the holes before drilling and it's easier to handle when up a ladder. After that I stretch a layer of self-amalgamating tape around the edge and install the camera over the template. This moves the camera slightly away from the brickwork allowing a little extra adjustment. Of course, longer screws are required in most cases. Now if I ever move the camera to another location, I have a mounting template.
ljarrald 0 Posted October 18, 2011 nice! for my ystem i was originally thinking of a camera zoomed in on the front gate (front gate is in a straight line from the door, about one and a bit meters) and one of the peep hole cams. but because my dad specifically said NO wires are to be showing and blah blah i went against the peep hole camera and decided to put a camera above in the porch. i will be installing these cameras this week hopefully. can you post some screen shots? Sawbones 0 Posted October 19, 2011 That spiky dome camera is quite the intimidating piece. My wife would NEVER go for that on our house.
ljarrald 0 Posted October 19, 2011 how does that cage effect what the camera can see?

Numb-nuts 1 Posted October 19, 2011 quote="ljarrald"]how does that cage effect what the camera can see? The vision through the cage isn't at all bad. Actually it was an experiment as I have mounted the camera at a height of about 4m and that is within range of idiots with eggs. The idea was to shatter any eggs thrown before they hit the dome as it's a nasty stuff to get off glass let alone a polycarbonate dome. The cage has been removed now and the dome has not been attacked. I was giving these youths and vandals credit for being more determined than I am. Thy are not. If there's a chance they can be identified, they won't misbehave. They only do what they think they can get away with. The spikes do look rather aggressive don't they? I was thinking of spraying them chrome silver, but frankly I have been too busy until now. I just recently got my hands on a Dennard housing which was losing it's paint and was letting in water. I replaced it but it was such a shame to throw out the housing. I took it to a bead blasting place and they stripped all the paint for me and I sprayed it with a can of Hammerite Silver. I was going to do it in bright pink but thought better of it. I had already stripped the entire contents of the housing including the glass. So after re assembling, the housing looks quite good actually. I have installed a Honeywell box camera with varifocal lens inside and intend to use it in my garden to watch over my shed. Here is a picture of it ready to be installed. What do you think of the way it looks ?
Sawbones 0 Posted October 19, 2011 Nice restoration on that housing.
ljarrald 0 Posted October 19, 2011 that looks good. i love engineers that don't let things go to waste. i have two 12vDC/24vAC ermm. Panasonic (i think, i knew what they were then just as i was about to write the make... poof. and the make has gone from my head) B+W box cameras from a skip at my old school. there were three housings in the skip so i went into school with a big bag and a multitool and at lunch i took the cameras out of the housings and put them in my bag (housings didn't fit) the 3rd housing just had a fake camera in unfortunately so i just made do with the two. i have no idea why they were thrown out, they were working perfectly. and no, its not theft (well it is but...) they were in a skip... destined for landfill. i just saved them. one is currently in my shed, the other is in my big box of cameras. i did think about using them in housings like that dennard one of yours but i think on a house they look too ... beefy(?) so i went for dome cameras instead. (i do have one 'bullet' camera, but the camera is built into the small housing so it works on a home) if they were colour i probably would of got two housings like below and put them in the alley. but i went for vantage day/night dome cameras instead. Numb-nuts 1 Posted October 19, 2011 (edited) The problem is that the housing was NOT cost effective, taking my time and effort into account, what it cost to have the housing blasted clean, buy the spray paint and the O ring chord to seal the unit. Blasting is a specialist job and you need a 3hp compressor minimum and excellent protection, (unless you want silicosis of the lungs). This project was just my little indulgence, a bit of fun really. Next time, I'll just rub down with sandpaper and hand paint with Hammerite hammered white. That would be more practical and cost effective. Come to think of it, a few housings in outrageous colours like flake metallic silver or gold would be a REAL exhibition stand attraction. I think I'll have a go with a dome camera housing when I have time. Edited October 19, 2011 by Guest
