Gv-600 install, do I need dedicated video card?

Recommended Posts

Hey folks,

I'm looking to build a computer to make a DVR camera system to connect to my to BNC cameras. Geovision seems to fit my needs perfectly. I found a GV-600 4ch 30fps card on amazon for 99 bucks. since I only have 2 cameras, they will each record in 15 FPS (right?) which should be more then enough.

as far as the computer, im typically an AMD guy, but after a lot of research it looks like intel is the way to go with these systems. I have an older Shuttle KPC that im not using for anything. it originally came loaded with foresight linux but I'll wipe it and throw XP or win 7 on there (suggestions on which would be better?)

the computer has a celeron CPU and 512MB ram that im going to upgrade to 2GB, and add a 2Tb hard drive. if the celeron is too underpowered I can upgrade it to a pentium D I have from a previous build. the one thing is that this system only has 1 PCI slot (which is where the geovision card would go) DO I NEED to have a dedicated video card for this? or will it run with the onboard graphics ok?

any other suggestions before I buy this card?

thanks so much in advance

Hi Drnick,

You do not need a VGA card, the GV-600 is enough to take the video streams from the BNC analog cameras. You can use a onboard graphics.

As for the OS, it depends on the card version. The earlier ones may not work with Win 7, but XP is definitely guaranteed to work.

As for your current spec, your spec seems alright (2G RAM, 2TB HDD), but for CPU, it is better to consider Pentium 4, 2.0 GHz or higher.
