drnick 0 Posted July 1, 2011 Hey folks, I just setup a Win 7 computer for Geovision, used some old parts I had sitting around (Core 2 duo CPU, 4GB ram,) I have an 80GB system drive and a 1.5TB drive where I'll be storing all the video files any suggestions on things I can turn off in win 7 to take up the least amount of resources (any services I can disable? other settings I can change?) I've already gone to advanced settings and selected "best performance" to turn off Aero and al the "pretty" stuff in win 7 that I don't need. just looking for some more "under the hood" type stuff. Also, any recommendations on where to place the swap file? usually in a 2 hard drive system I"ll put the swap file on the 2nd hard drive, but since that drive will be constantly writing video files, I'd assume thats not the best idea. my other idea is "short stroking" the system drive by dividing it into 3 partitions, making the 2nd partition right at the 40GB mark (its an 80GB drive) and placing the swap file there for maximum transfer rate.. thoughts? suggestions? thanks in advance
Birdman Adam 0 Posted July 1, 2011 Other than turning off Aero, I believe you can use a simple 'theme'. Like Windows 2k or XP! (Definitely won't use a lot of RAM...) I would only enable essential startup programs, and delete any bloatware, unnecessary stuff. The computer should be 100% dedicated to recording cameras. I would keep the system files and swap on the 80GB. Although unless you are recording like 24 cameras, the 1.5TB drive won't be working hard anyways. (BTW make sure you have a UPS in case of power flicker/outage). Also set PC to turn back on after AC loss.
drnick 0 Posted July 1, 2011 Thanks, I just build the computer and did a fresh install of win 7 64, its about as clean as clean can be. (no bloatware needed to be removed) I turned off file indexing and windows search, I'll keep the swap file on the 80 for now. I only have 2 BNC cameras right now, I"ll be adding at least 1 more IP camera at some point down the road. im sure I wont have a problem running it, but I figure while its nice and clean I'd rather configure everything so I won't have to go back in later as I add cameras
rory 0 Posted July 1, 2011 Best tweak ever, install XP Otherwise much of the tweaking for XP can be applied to Windows 7, it just takes more steps and will never be as fast. http://www.bahamassecurity.com/articles/pc-dvr-tweaks.asp Basically, visual tweaks and services tweaks will give you the most performance gain, also using a faster OS HDD like a fast Solid State or even a Raptor.
