Help on Integrated Camera Recording

Can anyone tell me what is Integrated Camera recording in IP camera? What is the purpose of it.......I was told that If the network of the IP camera fails , the Camera still records in its SD memory , Is it so?? or the concept is something different , like If the IP camera is connected to the DVR and if the DVR fails , then the camera starts recording in in its SD card?? which one is true , can anyone explain me in detail?
