afitzwater 0 Posted August 4, 2011 Hi everyone, I am currently looking for an IP camera that will give me better picture quality for longer distances. I am currently using cheap FOSCAM FI8918W cameras but have recently got some money to invest in a couple better cameras. Unfortunately, it's hard to tell what would do nicely without actually buying the product first. Here is a sample of one of our images. The camera is mounted 15 ft high and I am trying to get better detail of where the man is standing which is about 60 ft out. Also, our entire building is surrounded by glass windows. So the camera needs to be able to adapt to change in lighting conditions nicely (which the FOSCAM does horribly). What you see above is the sun rising on the East in the morning. In the afternoon it will be directly in front of the camera. I am trying to find something no more than $500 per camera, but cheaper is better to be able to replace other FOSCAM cameras. dmiller9 0 Posted August 5, 2011 What you need is a camera with good Wide Dynamic Range (WDR). When you get the natural sunlight coming into a room through glass the range of bright to dark become to great for most cameras to capture therefore you get over exposure and under exposure in certain areas of your image. A camera with WDR can compensate for this. I would recomend a Sony Ipela with view-DR (Sonys own WDR) or a Panasonic with WDR. Not all cameras with WDR are equal though. Check out the following image as all of these cameras are marketed as WDR and as you can see some preform better then others. jhonovich 0 Posted August 5, 2011 That image is taken from an IP Video Market Shootout on WDR MP cameras. I agree that WDR is needed here and that performance of WDR cameras can vary greatly. That noted, at a 60 feet width FoV, this is going to be hard to get a lot of details, even with a multi-megapixel camera. Consider tightening the field of view if logistically possible.
