Need help with choosing CCTV cameras

Hi all,

 

I've been broken into twice recently - we own a restaurant here and we're putting up cameras.

 

First of all - is this DVR ok?

I want the camera to cover the gate only which is 20 metres away, camera is around 4 metres from the ground and the gate is about 3 metres long.

Hi. jdowning. the dvr you have listed is miles to much money. for the same money but from the same distributor you can get the apollo HD. (and you get a better warranty than ebay)

 

with most of your cameras i would use domes. but your carpark area i would install a PTZ

 

for dome camera samsung TDN with built in baluns. then you can run cat5 to every camera.

 

looking at your building .... is it listed ?? very nice place. cat5 is the way to go coax and power would be hard to hide

Where you have trees and vegetation, IR is NOT a great idea as all you will see is the vegetation especially on a damp night.

I have also found that IR in the face tends to wash out the facial features so identification becomes a matter of luck.

I found this out the HARD way. PIR floodlighting or bulkhead lights is probably your best way to light up the scene at night.

You should aim to mount the cameras about 10 ft above the highest point a vandal could stand to access the camera, where this is not possible, an outdoor dome camera mounted on a wall or under an eaves would be better as they are less 'holdable' and a light coat of grease on the base to make them slippery just in case someone does get access.

 

Re the DVR that is about the correct price for that DVR. I am familiar with the Apollo as I have one myself, albeit a Zeus Mk11

and the interface is quite good.

ebay dvr you have listed. real time at cif and D1 at 6fps ebay £369 anywere else in the uk with Hard drives £146. 3 year warranty.

 

 

 

apollo HD pro 25fps at D1 £370 much better and faster dvr (same maker Dahua)

Make sure the DVR you buy can do D1 at at least 5FPS per channel, preferably more.

 

Visible light is best for night-time viewing, also cheaper. Try floodlights before IR if possible.

 

Try to get cameras with varifocal lenses so that you can adjust the zoom to get the viewing scene just right.

 

I'd get vandal-resistant dome cameras (outdoor rated of course) so people can't mess with the cameras.

 

Use cat5 UTP cable with baluns to get power and video to/from cameras.

Obviously when the place is closed there won't be much light so of course I'd put in some lights which light up when motion is detected.

 

I hear 'lux' is important - which lux should I be aiming for?

 

And roughly what type of lens would I be looking for? (mm)

 

And how would the cameras be wall mounted?

Thanks for the suggestions! Isn't 0.15lux not great though? Shouldn't I be aiming for around 0.000x lux?

 

Also - I used a lens calculator and it said I need a lens of 34.7 millimetres for the gate which is 20 metres away, the camera will be 4 metres from the ground and the gate will be 3 metres width. What camera would I need for that? a dome wouldn't do it, would it?

 

I don't have a clue so please guide me!

Isn't 0.15lux not great though?

 

 

hi 015lux is colour when you set up the camera for night you have settings to set for the enviroment the camera is in so B/W you would use the Sense Up setting On / Off (Selectable limit x 2 ~ x512) which when the camera has gone true day night you can set the lux down to 0.2

Hi all,

 

If I'm correct - I'm better using housed and body cameras if a target is far away? Dome cameras won't cut it? Could I get a good face view if a target is 20 metres away if I'm using one of these cameras? http://www.rfconcepts.co.uk/cctv-camera.htm and which lens should I use?

 

Gate is 20 metres away, camera is 3 metres from ground and gate is 4 metres wide.
