Running power over 60ft?

I have a 2 Q-See cameras that are 12V 500MA that I want to power over about 120-150FT.

 

I am going to order 2 of these from Amazon:

Will this supply be sufficient for the run or will I need a higher amperage? How can I know for sure?

 

I don't have any professional all in one tester tool but I have a multimeter which should be sufficient. I know I could test it this way but I still would like a sure way to know by calculating it.

If the camera is 500ma, go over just incase.

 

I power all 4 of my cameras off 1x 2A plug, but 2 of them draw less than 100ma each.

 

Distance wise 150' is short, but depends - what kind of cable are you using?

I work at RadioShack and I can pick up some transformers pretty cheap. Do you think these would be as good as any? I could put the two indoors on a 1amp 12V from RadioShack and use the one that came with the set of 4 for the two outdoor (over 150 ft each). That way I wouldn't have to worry about amperage since the thing will put out 2A.

 

I believe the wire size is 22 gauge. It's very small, but stranded.

 

Also, I cut 2 of the pigtails off of the splitter to use on my custom wire outside (cameras have a female DC jack coming out of them). Do I need to somehow close up where I cut off?

Yeah once the total amps of the PSU is a little more than the total current draw of the cameras should be fine either way.

 

The biggest issue though you might come across is powering 12VDC cameras on 22gauge wire, but 150' should be okay - I always use 18awg so I cant promise.

 

I dont understand the pigtail part though, but if its spliced or cut tape it up and or use wirenuts or beanies. In addition to that if its outside I would put it in a weatherproof gang box, or junction box.

I would not use 22#, if they are IR type. They are somewhat sensitive to the voltage at the camera, in terms of how much the IR will draw.

 

500mA may be the rating of the wall wart, not the camera. In which case you would be fine matching that. The Qsee's I have draw around 100-150mA w.o. IR and maybe another 100mA with IR. The Bosch D/N's I have don't even draw 500mA.

What is the best and safest way to test which side is positive and negative when cutting and splicing power wire?
