How far can the DC power boxes supply to a camera??

I was thinking about installing one of those 9 ch, DC power supply units next to my DVR, max run is approximate 350' and I am using CAT6 network cable

Should I attempt to run the entire 350' on the cat6 cable or find a local power source for my cameras.

Thats a pretty long ways for 12V DC and to use Cat5 doesnt help with the issue. If you can, shorten the power run with a closer power source.

How much power does your camera draw?

 

Using this calculator: http://www.netkrom.com/voltage_loss_over_cat5_calculator.html - if you use three pairs for power, and assuming your cameras only draw 300mA, you should only see about .5V loss at that range (keeping in mind that Cat6 is 23ga.)

 

If you're using IR cameras, you'll have to run separate power, or up the supply voltage.

Depends on what your power consumption is. If you combine the unused 3 pairs for power than the 24AWG becomes 18AWG which is standard for running power.

No... most of the ones that do are just cheap junk that are using IR to compensate for poor low-light performance.
