vmgtlexi 0 Posted September 30, 2011 This is my new Samsung SCO-2080R. I sort of regret using it in the spot. This location gets good night light from the front porch landscape lights. This is a color shot without any IR (the only lighting is my landscape lights). Not bad, but I think a B&W image would be even better. Question - if I had a TDN camera here (without IR), is it safe to say that in B&W mode a good TDN camera would have AMPLE light to create an even BETTER image at night (as long as the landscape lights are on)??? Since B&W can generate a good image in lower light than can color, I am guessing the answer is a resounding YES?? What say you? I guess I feel guilty running IR in this spot. The color is OK, but at night I think a good TDN switched over to B&W would be best???? I can't seem to run my SCO-2080R in B&W without the IR on.
vmgtlexi 0 Posted September 30, 2011 I bet it would have made more sense if I had not forgotten to attach the image mentioned above. Here it is:
shockwave199 0 Posted September 30, 2011 Why do you feel guilty about using the cameras IR? Whatever the case, you should consider making your choice with a person walking in that area and choose which one best captures that, as opposed to how an empty space looks. Walk up the stairs, down the stairs. Towards the door, back towards the stairs. Looking in each window. Looking right at the camera and not looking at the camera. Play the bad guy. It's the human you best want to setup for seeing.
vmgtlexi 0 Posted September 30, 2011 I feel guilty b/c I apparently didn't need IR in this spot. I could use this camera elsewhere where this is no ambient light. My experience is that IR boards die after about 3-4 years. So, I'd much prefer to use IR cameras sparingly and only where there is no other light source. I'll probably leave this cam where it is; but, I may replace it with a TDN dome. Would one generally expect a TDN in B&W mode to give an even crisper image than this color image, considering the available ambient light?
Soundy 1 Posted September 30, 2011 Question - if I had a TDN camera here (without IR), is it safe to say that in B&W mode a good TDN camera would have AMPLE light to create an even BETTER image at night (as long as the landscape lights are on)??? I suppose it depends on your definition of "better" - this is actually a pretty good image already. Shockwave is correct though, you should try it with a person moving about the scene - some cameras achieve better low-light images by using a longer shutter speed, which will lead to motion blur and make the image unusable for any kind of identification. A static scene like this isn't really useful as a comparison. Example: an IQ511 watching the street in front of my place, under the street lights... not bad, color cast is kinda weird because of the narrow-band lighting: Except with a 1/5s shutter speed, a car going through at a mere 30km/h is badly smeared:
vmgtlexi 0 Posted September 30, 2011 I was out there tonight sort of acting like a thief; I didn't post images/video of me in the night-time color test period only b/c I am so damn ugly! I did see the "ghosting" you mentioned. Wasn't too bad. I think it's related to the SSNR (noise reduction). When the SSNR is off, the footage is grainier (sp?) but little to no ghosting occurs. In hindsight, I should have put a good TDN camera here. Unfortunately, shopping for CCTV cameras is not like buying a family camcorder....ie, there's not a Consumer Reports magazine out there rating performance....buying CCTV gear is sort of a crap shoot, and an expensive one at that. rory 0 Posted September 30, 2011 Thats some strong landscaping lights! Any color camera will work there. check out the KT&C mini 550TVL color bullet KPC-VBN190NHWX - Its so small a thief will never even see it. maybe get the KT&C OR a color only dome. eg; CNB VFL-20s or similar and put the IR camera where it is needed. mike_va 0 Posted September 30, 2011 you have to pay to use that website. Yes, but I thought well; I pay for consumer reports monthly online so perhaps it would be of use to him. I don't see it get mentioned much, although sometimes comparison pics from there are posted by other users on this site.

Got it, at least I'm not the only one getting confused by these rules. I thought it applied to websites selling cameras and the like. Can you provide me a link to the rules so that I can try to avoid these mistakes?
shockwave199 0 Posted October 1, 2011 Tell you the truth I could use the rules too. I see so much bending of them I'm not sure what's allowed! Shame too- it's like having handcuffs on to try and recommend things. Makes it tough to carry on in a forum.
rory 0 Posted October 1, 2011 Tell you the truth I could use the rules too. I see so much bending of them I'm not sure what's allowed! Shame too- it's like having handcuffs on to try and recommend things. Makes it tough to carry on in a forum. Whats strange is, the rules have dissapeared LOL It was the forum guidelines thread in each subforum... will have to PM the admin. Basically its no advertising, no spam, no links to stores, no dealer pricing. Only recommend manufacturer products, only ones that do not sell to end users. Eg. if someone posts about a camera from a retail store it gets removed/edited. Nobody should post model numbers of cameras sold by stores, that helps nobody as the product is NOT the manufacturer's model number. Not everyone is going to want to buy from store ## but once the manufacturer's model number is posted then they can source the camera from a distributor in their area or ask for suggestions by PM. A product rebadged by a true manufacturer who also DOES NOT sell to end users, that is also acceptable as long as we know who the true manufacturer is. Where is the bending you see? 2 mods cant catch every post so need the help of every member. BTW I ban spammers every day now, its constant work here. shockwave199 0 Posted October 1, 2011 Where is the bending you see? It's 3:30 in the morning- my brain is bending I guess with that short explanation, what I thought was bending isn't. I think! BTW I ban spammers every day now, its constant work here. I've run a popular audio forum for ten years. I know what you mean. The past two years or so it got slow enough to close registration, but you can still email me and I'll register for you and then you take your account from there. I call it 'select registration'. It's still work, but it's better than weeding through endless spam- the spambots I mean. There isn't a filter around that'll stop it. I feel for ya! And since I pay for the site myself, there's no sponcers to worry about, hense we can recommend anything- a nice thing.
