I hope I'll be forgiven for a small bit of promotion here, but I think this link will be useful for people here.

 

There are hundreds (possibly thousands) of different video file formats in the CCTV industry. Just figuring out which player to use can be a real pain.

 

I’ve worked in CCTV forensics for a number of years and have built up a huge database of file formats, manufacturers and software players. I decided to put it online (and free) for anyone who needs it.

Its a work in progress, so I’m hoping for feedback (and feature suggestions to make the ID tool better) and if you find a format thats not in my database, please let me know and I’ll add it.
