rkolb86 0 Posted November 17, 2011 Planning on building a cheap system for my father. Capture Card: TW-220 (8ch Software Compression, no audio) http://store.bluecherry.net/products/TW%252d220-%252d-8-port-video-capture-card-%28240FPS%29-%252d-Realtime-recording%2C-PCIe-%28Windows-64bit-support!%29.html Ram: 4GB CPU: i3-2100 (3.1GHz, Dual Core with HT) GPU: Intel HD 2000 I'm going to use iSpy or Blue Iris for software. I will have, at most, 8 analog cameras Live View and Recording (prob on motion) at 640x480 at 15 FPS or better (prob closer to 20-30 if possible) Think the i3 is up to the task? Soundy 1 Posted November 17, 2011 Looking at the page for that card, I'd be more worried about the card and/or software not measuring up. Note that they don't provide software with the card, only the drivers, and they don't offer much support unless you're using their own Linux installation and software, so if you run into problems, you could be SOL. If you're going to build a Windows machine, you may find that various third-party software may or may not work well with it, too.
rkolb86 0 Posted November 17, 2011 I have another one of their cards...its actually one that is designed for Linux. The specific card that I posted is actually designed for Windows, not linux. It is not the card that they provide for their custom Zoneminder build. Each video port is is a WDM device. The card is actually a Provideo card (http://www.provideo.com.tw/DVR%20Card_TW-220.htm). I've had no issues with their other card. Although I've never used this specific card, I'm willing to take a chance...esp for $180. Any opinion on the i3? I've heard of people doing s/w compression with Geovision cards...something like 10 analog cameras at an unspecified resolution on an old dual core core2 duo. Sandy Bridge is a huge step up from that, but I'm hoping for somebody with experience in software compression, i3s, and analog cameras to give me their opinion. Soundy 1 Posted November 18, 2011 I have six-year-old 16-channel Vigil systems out in the field still running happily on their original P4/1.6GHz 512MB RAM machines...
rkolb86 0 Posted November 18, 2011 Alright. That's what I though. I think it will work if that work. I know my 4 port card with s/w compression worked on my Single Core 3.0 GHz P4 w/ HT at D1, 30fps live/record with 3 cameras, and CPUs have changed a LOT since then. I just wasn't 100%. I think I am now. Thanks.
