ljnl 0 Posted November 18, 2011 Hi, What is the best way to find cables (cat5 & coax) that are already buried in the ground? I'm at the beginning of installing a camera system in my garden and as it turns out there are already cables in place, but never used. The cables have 5m extra length for mounting on a mast. Only problem is nobody seems to know where there are exactly. I do know in what 'corners' they are, but after digging a few holes here and there I still can't find them. It's like looking for treasure, I got this large red X that marks the spot and that's all I don't even know how deep to dig.. Any advice? Thanks in advance! All the best, LJ

jeromephone 6 Posted November 24, 2011 you can get an underground cable locator starting at about 250.00 on up maybe you can rent one. If these cables are not cat five direct bury rated you are wasting your time i would not trust them if somebody did not take the time to put in conduit which is cheap but protects the cable from your locating tool (shovel) as well as provides a means to add additional if needed.
