CoolDude 0 Posted August 14, 2005 I have been offered a DSR at a reasonable price but it only has the 30gig hard drive. Are larger drives available as generics or am I locked into GE drives and would I be able to switch it out myself? Thanks
rory 0 Posted August 14, 2005 Depends on the version number. You will find this when you boot it up, or once it is powered up you can go into the menu section and check the version number there. Also, you can check the version number remotely over the LAN or WAN. 30GB sounds like an old one maybe version 1.2 or 1.3. There are upgrade BIN files for both of these versions, PM me if you need them, but you MUST know the exact version number. DSR2000 1.1X or 1.2X - maximum HDD size of 120GB and can have two installed to maximum 240GB of storage DSR2000 1.3X - maximum HDD size of 160GB and can have one, two or four installed to a maximum of 640GB of storage. DSR2000/1000 2.XX - maximum HDD size of 250GB and can have one, two or four installed to a maximum of 1TB of storage. Hard Drives typically are 5400rpm. Best bet is to use the same brand and speed that are in the DVR. Cant remember the typical brand off hand though, but its not a GE HDD. Also they are to be unpartitioned and unformated. Now, this is what I have been told, ive never done it myself.
MetzLyov 0 Posted August 14, 2005 Adding hard drives is a snap for this recorder and it is a plug and play.... Rory is correct, the version of the firmware will dictate recognition of how much hard drive you can add... Also, these hard drives do not have to be formated or partitioned because the firmware will take care of it for you (THIS IS SIMILAR TO SANYO EMBEDDED SYSTEMS) - Excellent observation Rory... As for the type of hard drives, make sure you are using ATA hard drives. They initially were using Maxtor and had serious problems with that manufacturer (this problem existed with American Dynamics and others as well). Then all of them switched between Seagate and Western Digital over a year ago... Since the change to these new hard drive manufacturers, no problems have been reported.. Pricing between 5400 RPM and 7200 RPM hard drives is not much. We normally buy a box of (20) and it is few dollars cheaper... Levon
$pace @ce 0 Posted May 2, 2007 I have a DSR-200e with an 80gb HD. I have a second 80gb HD that I would like to add to double the capacity. I can get either one of them to work and boot with 80gb, but I can't seem to get both of them to give me 160gb together. I have Version 1.12. Each HD is plugged into a different header. Only one header will boot with the HD. Master, Slave and Cable Select has no effect. Is there a jumper that needs to be set on this for it to recognize both drives? Do they both need to come off of the same header with a 2 drive cable? Any help appreciated. $pace @ce
rory 0 Posted May 2, 2007 its been a while but as I remember it was the normal master and slave jumper settings. BUT, they must both be 5400 rpm drives, as 7200 draws too much current for the default Power Supply. If you want to use 7200rpm drives you would need the PSU upgrade which requires certification by GE - not worth it. Theoretically you could use a regular PC power supply, not sure if it would fit though, you could look for a bookcase PSU and try that, may need to mount it outside though and extend the cables.
