Typically some hard drives have a USB splitter-cable to supply additional current via a powered uSB hub, a separate power supply, or even plug it into a nearby PC (it just takes 5 volts). First thing to try is a solid-state jump drive, and the second thing to try is to add power to an external hard drive, but in your case I would try not to experiment too much with power til you get your footage.
