even new analogue dvrs make a decent camera look like crap for the live display even on a decent monitor...I can't understand why it looks mangled......another reason for a hybrid system with encoders

When I plug a decent analogue camera into a decent DVR and on a decent big LCD, I get a perfect picture. Every monitor differs and also the connection type from the DVR can make a difference. Eg. VGA from Dahua DVRs actually look better than the Composite output, back in the day it was the other way around and still is with some DVRs, also we use HDMI outputs now as well.

Technically speaking, it should be the other way around.

Some do and some dont. If you are getting worse live video through a DVR as opposed to running it directly to a monitor, then that kind of DVR sucks. Most good DVR's will simply "pipe through" the live feed to the TV and it shouldnt look hardly any different at all as opposed to running a cable from the camera right into the monitor. It all depends on what type of output you are using too. Most DVR's made today have HDMI or VGA outputs. Some DVR's have sucky output through the composite but brilliant output through VGA or HDMI. But like I said, the encoders are not going to magically enhance the live video, actually they degrade it. If anything, the live video should look better on a DVR as opposed to putting it through an encoder because the live video is not as compressed as what the live video of the camera with an encoder is.

But live display doesnt really mean jack in the end. Its really the recorded video what count when all said and done.

We pulled about 100 analog cameras off of GE DVMRE DVRs and put them on Avigilon Jpeg 2000 encoders and it was almost night and day difference in the image quality of live video.

The analog would go into the DVR then out to the Matrix Switcher and then displayed in 42" monitors either as singe views or the matrix output of the DVR.

I think the reason it looked so much better is because the computer did such a better job of resizing the images to fit the monitor.

GE has put almost zero R&D into their security side since the 90s. Casi went to waste and hasn't been touched forever, allowing everything else to surpass it and then some (not to mention they had like 12 access control lines which only confused people).

When they bought IFS they all but stopped development on it (the guys from IFS actually started their own company now - forgot the name).

Their CCTV line... disaster. They changed software and OS's multiple times - first preaching linux, which was fine but something no end user wanted to mess with, then switching to windows with various versions of buggy software. Facility Commander being the worst. The camera line has gone through multiple revisions, each time requiring different mounts, part #s, etc... their legend PTZ domes STILL don't work (anyone else have these randomly freeze and reboot?). They blame the network for all of their IP issues, but every time we've hung a different camera out on the network it's worked flawlessly.

Talk about a mess of a company... They really let their security fall to old buggy dilapidated crap before selling it all off to UTC.

In otherwords... it's not really fair to use them as a comparison.

My DVR routes the captured video through the compression stage and then directly to disk; monitoring a camera is done by playing back the recorded image data. With this WYSIWYG approach, there will be no unpleasant surprises such as discovering that the recoded signal doesn't look as good as the "live" signal.

The GE DVMRE used an RTOS called Nucleus, not linux (came from the Kalatel take over).

And for several years it ruled the CCTV industry as there was nothing else out there worth talking about.

We just replaced a whole bunch of DVRs with encoders and we discovered that all of the ground loop issues went away. So you can add that to the list of advantages with using encoders.

I don't disagree. I used to be a fan, it used to be good stuff. The Casi stuff is still solid, but it's never been updated and everything has surpassed it. Very limited applications now where a micro/5 is equal or better than something else, and with fcwnx it never is.

Their reps always touted their first NVR's as "ooh, look at our linux stuff". There was a time when it was top notch, 5-6 years ago it was still competitive, its now pretty far down there in my opinion. I've done around 5 major casi systems over the past 5 years and the decline in quality and support has been massive. Doubt I'll ever do another GE CCTV System, but UTC might bring them back around.

Yeah their progress has been slow or next to none after those.

I dont use them anymore. Reminds me of the Compass Downloader for Ademco ..

Thing is a 16 bit app from Windows 95 days .. still being distributed ..

Ahh I remember the Compass downloader. Funny, you had to go through that box because the modem in your computer was too fast

We still do a lot of Facility Commander and Picture Perfect. Picture is about to roll out a new version actually.

still use Compass Downloader to this day, infact they still want you to use their serial modem, but went around them and now we use a special USB modem plugged into an iMac running XP

i just got the vivotek encoder. i don't notice any difference in quality from a 4 cif recorded image on that Samsung srd-1652 dvr and the encoder.
