smtp email notifications?

hi, i would like to setup email notifications on my dvr but i can only use an SMTP server. i do not know of and email providers that use SMTP so ama bit stuck... could anybody help me?

Pretty much all email systems except Exchange use SMTP to accept email from clients.

 

You'll want to find the SMTP server IP for the ISP you're connected through, and enter that - for example, if the internet connection is through Comcast Cable, you'd want to use Comcast's SMTP server.

my ISP is orange.

according to this website the smtp server is smtp.orangehome.co.uk. if i trace that in CMD i get the ip: 193.252.22.189 will this be the ip to use?

 

what about the port and 'local email address'?

However I tried telnet to that SMTP server and port 25 and its a no go.

yeah just remembered my ISP blocks all outgoing connections through port 25.

you can use the server test on this site to check it though.

Should just be able to leave that blank.

Correct, that SHOULD work.

Port is 25, unless your ISP specifies otherwise.

 

Local address would normally be your address, although it can probably be just about anything. You should probably enter something at least resembling a real email address, as the SMTP server may reject it otherwise.

He HAS to use the IP - the DVR setup doesn't give the option to enter a hostname (see screenshot above).

i should mention that i am doing all of this remotely... i will not have acess inside the house for a couple of weeks. i can access the router setup and the dvr. i have just thought that i can not access the dvr from a web browser (it uses port 25) so i will try opening incoming and outgoing port 25.

Gmail's SMTP requires encryption and auth. That DVR appears to support neither.

i used the orange smtp IP and just put in my email address in the 'local user' i spelt it wrong which made me realise... (as you said) it just needs something that resembles an email address to identify itself in my inbox with
